Team Nigeria at 2026 Commonwealth Games Day 7 Wrap: Enekwechi Makes History
Team Nigeria continued its impressive campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with another productive day that produced a historic gold medal, a bronze medal and several qualification successes across athletics.
The headline performance came from Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, who became the first Nigerian athlete to win the men’s shot put title at the Commonwealth Games. Enekwechi produced a championship-winning throw of 21.07 metres in the fifth round to secure the gold medal.
New Zealand’s Tom Walsh settled for silver with a best throw of 21.03m, while England’s Scott Lincoln claimed bronze after throwing 20.99m.
Nigeria also celebrated another podium finish through Tobi Amusan, who won bronze in the women’s 100m hurdles.
The reigning world record holder clocked a wind-assisted 12.60 seconds in the final after posting an even faster wind-assisted 12.19 seconds in the semi-finals.
In the men’s 400m, Samuel Ogazi underlined his status as one of the favourites for gold after producing the fastest semifinal performance in Commonwealth Games history.
The Nigerian national record holder stormed to victory in 44.52 seconds, finishing comfortably ahead of Botswana’s Lee Eppie (45.26s) and Jamaica’s Zandriom Barnes (45.38s).
There was more good news for Team Nigeria as Edidiong Udo booked his place in the men’s 400m final on his Commonwealth Games debut.
Udo initially finished third in his semifinal in 45.55 seconds, but was later promoted to second place following the disqualification of Jamaica’s Antonio Watson.
In the women’s 400m, Ella Onojuvwevwo delivered another commanding performance, winning her semifinal in 51.47 seconds to qualify for the final.
She finished ahead of Wales’ Charlotte Henrich (52.13s) and Jamara Patterson (52.92s).
However, Patience Okon-George and Esther Joseph narrowly missed out on qualification after finishing fifth and sixth respectively in the same semifinal with times of 53.21s and 53.26s.
Nigeria also secured a finalist in the men’s 200m as Udodi Onwuzurike finished second in his semifinal in a wind-assisted 20.22 seconds, crossing the line just behind Jamaica’s Christopher Taylor.
The women’s 200m campaign ended in the semifinals, with Jennifer Chukwuka Obi finishing fifth in 23.25 seconds, while Olayinka Olajide placed seventh in 23.79 seconds.
In the field events, Chinecherem Prosper Nnamdi battled difficult conditions to qualify for the men’s javelin final.
His final throw of 75.27 metres earned him the 12th and last qualifying spot.
Nigeria also enjoyed a strong showing in the men’s decathlon, where Jami Schlueter ended Day One in fourth place with 4,196 points.
His performances included 10.70s in the 100m, 7.16m in the long jump, 15.35m in the shot put, 1.97m in the high jump and 49.71s in the 400m.
In para athletics, Unyima Uwak finished fifth in the women’s T47 100m final with a season’s best time of 12.63 seconds.
Meanwhile, Oyindamola Abdullahi Tijani and guide Okeyah Bethel represented Nigeria in the men’s tandem B 1000m time trial in para track cycling, finishing fifth in 1:14.504.
With Enekwechi’s historic triumph and several athletes advancing to medal events, Team Nigeria remains firmly on course for a strong finish as the 2026 Commonwealth Games enters its closing stages.
