Glasgow 2026: Tobi Amusan Loses Commonwealth 100m Hurdles Crown, Settles for Bronze
Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan relinquished her Commonwealth Games women’s 100m hurdles title after finishing with the bronze medal in a fiercely contested final at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Thursday.
The reigning world record holder had arrived in Scotland aiming to become the first woman to win three consecutive Commonwealth 100m hurdles titles, having struck gold at Gold Coast 2018 and successfully defended her crown at Birmingham 2022.
However, her quest for a historic hat-trick came to an end as she was forced to settle for third place.
Amusan had looked every inch a favourite after producing a commanding performance in the heats, where she clocked an impressive 12.19 seconds, the fastest time heading into the final.
But she was unable to replicate that form in the medal race, crossing the line in 12.60 seconds to claim bronze.
Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton delivered a superb performance to capture the gold medal, ending Amusan’s eight-year reign as Commonwealth champion in the event.
Charlton’s victory marked one of the standout moments of the athletics programme, while Amusan had to settle for a place on the podium after another highly competitive final.
Although disappointed to surrender her title, the bronze medal further enhances Amusan’s remarkable international résumé.
The Nigerian sprint hurdler remains one of the most decorated athletes in African athletics, boasting the world record, the 2022 world title, multiple Diamond League victories, African championships, and now a third consecutive Commonwealth Games medal.
Her latest podium finish also strengthens Team Nigeria’s athletics campaign in Glasgow, where the country has continued to collect medals across several disciplines.
Earlier on Thursday, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi delivered a historic gold medal in the men’s shot put, adding to Nigeria’s growing success at the Games.
While the result denied Amusan a unique Commonwealth three-peat, her consistency at the highest level remains unquestionable.
After winning gold in 2018 and 2022, she leaves Glasgow with bronze, extending her impressive record of medalling at three successive Commonwealth Games.
Attention will now turn to the remainder of the 2026 athletics season, where Amusan is expected to resume her pursuit of more global honours as she continues to rank among the world’s elite sprint hurdlers.
