Team Nigeria will look to continue its impressive medal haul at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Friday (Day 8), with several athletes in action across athletics and judo.
Having enjoyed another successful outing on Thursday, highlighted by Chukwuebuka Enekwechi’s historic gold medal in the men’s shot put, the Nigerian contingent now shifts its attention to the athletics programme, where multiple medal opportunities await.
The day’s biggest medal hopes rest on three athletics finals.
Nigeria’s Chinecherem Nnamdi opens the evening session in the men’s javelin final at 8:15 pm, aiming to challenge for a place on the podium after showing encouraging form this season.
At 9:00 pm, African record holder Ezekiel Nathaniel will line up in the men’s 400m hurdles final.
Nathaniel enters the race as one of the favourites and is expected to mount a serious challenge for the gold medal after an outstanding campaign.
Another strong medal prospect comes in the men’s 200 metres final at 9:25 pm, where Udodi Onwuzurike will be hoping to cap his impressive run in Glasgow with a podium finish.
Elsewhere, Jami Schlueter continues his demanding decathlon campaign.
The Nigerian will compete throughout the day in the 110m hurdles (10:13 am), discus throw (10:50 am), pole vault (12:20 pm), javelin throw (7:00 pm) and concludes the event with the 1500m at 8:35 pm.
In the field events, Ruth Usoro begins her quest for a place in the women’s long jump final when she competes in the qualification round at 11:54 am.
Nigeria will also feature in the mixed 4x400m relay heats at 11:35 am, with the team targeting qualification for the final.
The judo competition gets underway for Team Nigeria with Kehinde Aremu competing in the men’s -66kg round of 32 at 11:00 am.
Should he progress, compatriot Michael Agbo is scheduled for the round of 16 at 11:54 am.
