NPFL Week 5 Preview: Inter, Sporting Lagos Face Former Winners as Wounded Enyimba Seek Revival
The EuroMatch Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) enters its first midweek round of the 2026/27 season on Wednesday with newcomers Inter Lagos and Sporting Lagos facing two of the competition’s established former winners, while wounded Enyimba look to finally kick-start their campaign.
Inter Lagos will host former champions Kano Pillars in Lagos, while Sporting Lagos travel to Aba to face nine-time NPFL champions Enyimba, creating one of the most intriguing storylines of Matchday 5.
The two fixtures underline the changing landscape of the NPFL, with newly promoted sides being tested against clubs with established championship pedigree.
Week 5 comes immediately after a dramatic fourth round in which Kano Pillars ended Doma United’s perfect start with a 4-1 victory, Inter Lagos secured their first top-flight win by beating Enyimba 1-0 in Aba, and Rangers strengthened their title defence with a 4-2 victory over Kun Khalifat.
Enyimba vs Sporting Lagos
Enyimba return to Aba under mounting pressure after losing their opening four league matches.
The nine-time champions suffered their latest setback at home on Sunday, falling 1-0 to Inter Lagos after Moses Ezekiel’s early goal condemned the Aba giants to another defeat.
The result leaves Enyimba without a point after three matches and at the bottom of the standings.
Their next opponents, Sporting Lagos, are another relatively new force in the NPFL, but Wednesday’s encounter will be their first meeting with one of the league’s most decorated clubs this season.
Sporting Lagos have also endured an uneven beginning. They opened their campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Doma United, later defeated Inter Lagos 3-0 in the Lagos derby, before suffering a 2-0 home defeat to Abia Warriors in their latest outing.
The Lagos side therefore arrive in Aba looking for a response, while Enyimba desperately need their first points.
The fixture has also been preceded by reports of disruption at Enyimba’s training ground involving Sporting Director Daniel Eke who invaded the training ground with men of the Rapid Response Squad officials.
With Enyimba’s difficult start already generating significant attention, another defeat would increase the pressure around the former champions.
Inter Lagos vs Kano Pillars
Inter Lagos have little time to savour their historic first NPFL victory.
After defeating Enyimba 1-0 in Aba, the newcomers return to Lagos to face another former champion in Kano Pillars.
It is a considerably different challenge.
Pillars produced one of the standout results of Matchday 4 by beating previously unbeaten Doma United 4-1 in Kano, ending the leaders’ perfect start and strengthening their own position near the top of the table.
Inter Lagos, meanwhile, have now shown they can compete against established opposition after their breakthrough victory over Enyimba.
The Lagos newcomers had previously suffered defeats to Shooting Stars, Doma United and Sporting Lagos, but the victory in Aba could provide a significant confidence boost.
Now they must demonstrate whether that result was the beginning of a turnaround or simply an isolated breakthrough.
For Kano Pillars, another victory would maintain the momentum generated by their emphatic defeat of Doma United.
Newcomers Against Former Winners
The Inter Lagos-Kano Pillars and Enyimba-Sporting Lagos fixtures give Week 5 a distinctive narrative.
Inter Lagos and Sporting Lagos represent the newer generation of Lagos-based clubs seeking to establish themselves in the NPFL.
Kano Pillars and Enyimba, meanwhile, are former league winners with long-standing histories in Nigerian top-flight football.
Both newcomers have already experienced the intensity of playing established opposition, but Wednesday provides another opportunity to measure their progress against clubs with championship pedigree.
Doma United vs Plateau United
Doma United will be looking to bounce back immediately after their first defeat of the campaign.
The Gombe side had won their opening three matches without conceding before Kano Pillars produced a 4-1 victory on Sunday.
Despite the defeat, Doma remain at the top of the table and will want to prevent the result from affecting their early momentum.
Plateau United arrive with confidence after beating Shooting Stars 3-1 and will hope to exploit any uncertainty within the league leaders.
Rangers vs Ranchers Bees
Defending champions Rangers will face one of the league’s most impressive newcomers when Ranchers Bees visit.
Rangers defeated Kun Khalifat 4-2 last weekend to record back-to-back victories, while Ranchers Bees continued their promising debut campaign with a 2-1 win over Bendel Insurance.
Ranchers Bees have already demonstrated their attacking quality, making the encounter another test of Rangers’ defensive organisation.
Barau FC vs Abia Warriors
Barau FC remain unbeaten after four matches and will host an Abia Warriors side buoyed by their first victory of the season.
Barau held Ikorodu City to a goalless draw last weekend, while Abia Warriors defeated Sporting Lagos 2-0 in Lagos.
The Kano encounter will therefore bring together two sides entering the fixture with confidence for different reasons.
Bendel Insurance vs Ikorodu City
Bendel Insurance will seek a response after their 2-1 defeat to Ranchers Bees.
Ikorodu City, meanwhile, held Barau FC to a goalless draw and will be looking to turn their defensive resilience into maximum points.
The match could prove important for both sides as they attempt to gain ground in the early standings.
Shooting Stars vs Katsina United
Shooting Stars return home after a 3-1 defeat to Plateau United.
They face Katsina United, who secured their first victory of the season by beating Niger Tornadoes 1-0.
The Ibadan side will be counting on home advantage to immediately return to winning ways.
Niger Tornadoes vs Warri Wolves
Niger Tornadoes will host Warri Wolves after suffering a narrow defeat to Katsina United.
Warri Wolves, meanwhile, defeated Kwara United 1-0 in their previous outing.
Both sides will be seeking greater consistency as the early battle for points intensifies.
Kwara United vs Nasarawa United
Kwara United return home after their 1-0 defeat to Warri Wolves.
Nasarawa United enter the fixture after holding Rivers United to a 1-1 draw and will be looking for another positive result away from home.
The encounter could have an immediate impact on the middle section of the table.
Rivers United vs Kun Khalifat
Rivers United will complete the Week 5 programme against Kun Khalifat on Thursday.
The Port Harcourt side remain unbeaten after three matches, while Kun Khalifat will be looking to recover from their 4-2 defeat to Rangers.
The additional day’s recovery could be important for both teams following a demanding sequence of fixtures.
Week 4 Changes the Picture
The previous round produced several results that have set up an intriguing midweek programme.
Kano Pillars’ 4-1 victory over Doma United ended the leaders’ perfect start, while Inter Lagos’ 1-0 win over Enyimba gave the newcomers their first NPFL victory.
Rangers beat Kun Khalifat 4-2, Ranchers Bees defeated Bendel Insurance 2-1, Plateau United overcame Shooting Stars 3-1 and Abia Warriors secured their first win with a 2-0 victory over Sporting Lagos.
Barau FC and Ikorodu City played out a goalless draw, Rivers United drew 1-1 with Nasarawa United, Katsina United defeated Niger Tornadoes 1-0 and Warri Wolves edged Kwara United by the same scoreline.
Enyimba’s Urgent Need for a Turnaround
While the newcomers will be looking to build on their progress against former champions, Enyimba face a different kind of challenge.
Four matches have produced four defeats, leaving the nine-time champions without a point.
Their meeting with Sporting Lagos therefore carries significance beyond the normal early-season battle for points.
A first victory would provide immediate relief and offer the club an opportunity to begin rebuilding momentum.
Another defeat, however, would deepen an already difficult start.
With the first midweek round of the season bringing together newcomers, former champions, early leaders and teams searching for recovery, Week 5 promises to provide another important snapshot of how the 2026/27 NPFL campaign is beginning to take shape.
