Enyimba Training Disrupted as Sporting Director Eke Storms Training Ground With RRS Officials Ahead of Sporting Lagos Clash
Tension at Enyimba FC escalated on Monday as Sporting Director Daniel Eke reportedly arrived at the club’s training ground in Aba accompanied by officials identified as Rapid Response Squad (RRS) personnel, disrupting the team’s preparations for Wednesday’s Nigeria Premier Football League clash with Sporting Lagos.
An eyewitness who confided in Sportsbeat.ng said the development brought Monday’s training session to an abrupt halt, with some club officials reportedly removed from the training facility during the confrontation.
The eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter, said the situation created significant tension at the training ground as players and members of the coaching and administrative staff were caught up in the unfolding dispute.
The incident came less than 24 hours after Enyimba suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Inter Lagos in Aba, a result that left the nine-time NPFL champions still searching for their first league points of the 2026/27 campaign.
According to the eyewitness, the arrival of Eke with the security personnel was linked to an ongoing disagreement within the club, although the precise circumstances that triggered Monday’s confrontation remained unclear at the time of filing this report.
There were also unconfirmed reports that some personnel were subsequently taken to a police facility following the incident.
Sportsbeat.ng could not independently establish whether formal arrests were made, and no official statement had been issued by the Nigeria Police, the Rapid Response Squad or Enyimba FC on the matter as of the time of publication.
Growing tension around Enyimba
Monday’s incident adds to growing concerns over the internal affairs of a club that has endured a difficult opening to the new NPFL season.
Enyimba began their campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Niger Tornadoes before suffering a 2-0 loss away to Doma United. Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Inter Lagos subsequently left the Aba-based side without a point after three league matches.
The latest setback has increased scrutiny on the club’s football administration, with the team struggling both for results and stability.
Inter Lagos secured their first NPFL victory through Ezekiel Moses, whose 18th-minute header proved decisive in Aba.
The defeat also compounded the pressure on Enyimba ahead of Wednesday’s home fixture against Sporting Lagos.
Off-field concerns add to pressure
The latest confrontation comes amid reports of disagreements surrounding the club’s administration and football operations.
Enyimba Sporting Director Daniel Eke was appointed earlier in 2026 as part of efforts to strengthen the club’s football structure, with responsibilities around sporting strategy, recruitment and the club’s broader football development programme.
The reported presence of security personnel at Monday’s training session has now added another layer to the situation, with questions likely to be raised about the circumstances surrounding the disruption and the involvement of security authorities.
Neither Enyimba FC nor the relevant security authorities had issued an official statement explaining Monday’s events as of the time of publication.
Sporting Lagos test awaits
With the off-field drama threatening to overshadow preparations, Enyimba must now turn their attention to the league.
The People’s Elephant are scheduled to host Sporting Lagos at the Enyimba Stadium on Wednesday in a Matchday Five fixture.
Sporting Lagos will also arrive in Aba seeking a response after suffering a 2-0 home defeat to Abia Warriors on Sunday.
For Enyimba, however, Wednesday’s encounter represents more than another league fixture.
The club will be seeking its first points of the season while attempting to restore calm around the team following a turbulent start to the campaign.
