Preparations for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games Trials have gathered momentum as athletes from across the country continue to arrive in Lagos ahead of the highly anticipated event scheduled to hold at the Yaba College of Technology (YabaTech) Sports Complex.
The nation’s commercial capital is witnessing an influx of athletes, coaches and officials from various states, all aiming to secure places on Team Nigeria for the next Commonwealth Games.
Athletes from Akwa Ibom State were among the first contingents to arrive in Lagos, followed closely by their counterparts from Kwara State. Several elite athletes have also arrived in the city, raising expectations for what promises to be a fiercely competitive championship.
Excitement is already building within the athletics community as key officials of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) converge on Lagos to oversee preparations for the trials.
AFN President, Chief Tonobok Okowa, alongside members of the federation’s Technical Committee, is expected to supervise the final arrangements and ensure the smooth organisation of the event.
Organisers have also begun receiving technical equipment required for the competition as efforts intensify to deliver a successful championship.
The National Institute for Sports (NIS), located within the National Stadium complex in Surulere, is currently serving as a transit camp for early arrivals. The facility is providing accommodation and logistical support for athletes and officials ahead of the commencement of activities.
Meanwhile, the official AFN camp for qualified athletes is scheduled to open on June 19, marking the start of final preparations for the three-day trials.
The Commonwealth Games Trials are expected to showcase some of Nigeria’s finest track and field talents, with athletes battling for national team spots and the opportunity to represent the country on the international stage.
With established stars, emerging talents and top federation officials all converging on Lagos, the countdown has begun to what is expected to be one of the most keenly contested athletics events of the year.
