Nigerian teenager Zadok Yohanna has given Brighton fans an early glimpse of his potential after making an impressive preseason debut in a 3-0 win over AS Roma.
The 19-year-old forward came off the bench for the final 30 minutes and immediately brought pace, energy and aggression to Brighton’s attack against the Italian giants.
Zadok completed 100 percent of his attempted dribbles, registered one shot on target and completed nine of his 12 passes, finishing with a 75 percent passing accuracy from 21 touches.
He was also keen to drive Brighton forward, completing two of three passes in the final third and attempting four progressive passes.
But it was not just his attacking contribution that stood out.
Zadok won three of seven ground duels, completed his only attempted tackle and made one recovery as he showed a willingness to compete physically despite his limited time on the pitch.
His explosive acceleration was another major highlight, with the Nigerian repeatedly using his pace to escape pressure and create space.
There were, however, signs that the youngster still has work to do. His decision-making in attacking situations will need to improve as he adapts to the pace and tactical demands of English football.
Zadok was handed a 6.5 rating for his 30-minute cameo — a solid first outing against high-profile opposition.
The teenager joined Brighton after spending two seasons in Sweden with AIK. Last season, he scored two goals and provided two assists in seven league appearances.
His preseason debut will now give Brighton’s coaching staff more reason to keep a close eye on his development.
Zadok Yohanna has made his first impression. Now, the challenge is turning that promise into regular first-team opportunities.
