FIFA Breaks IFAB Rules as Burna Boy, Justin Bieber, Shakira, BTS and Madonna Headline Historic World Cup Final Halftime Show
FIFA is set to rewrite World Cup history on Sunday as global music stars Burna Boy, Justin Bieber, Shakira, BTS and Madonna headline the FIFA World Cup first-ever halftime show.
The half time show is a landmark spectacle that will also see football’s governing body break with the International Football Association Board (IFAB) regulations by extending the traditional halftime interval of 15 minutes to 30 minutes during the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, where Argentina will face Spain to determine the world champions.
The historic final, scheduled for July 19 at the New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, will feature a Super Bowl-style halftime entertainment show, with the interval expected to last up to 25 minutes instead of the standard 15 minutes stipulated in the IFAB Laws of the Game.
The move marks a significant shift from football tradition as FIFA embraces a new entertainment model designed to transform the World Cup final into a global sporting and cultural spectacle.
While the musical performance itself is expected to run for about 11 minutes, additional time will be required for the construction and removal of the stage, resulting in the extended halftime break.
The star-studded lineup reflects FIFA’s ambition to deliver one of the biggest entertainment productions in football history.
Nigerian Grammy Award-winning sensation Burna Boy will share the stage with pop superstar Justin Bieber, Colombian icon Shakira, K-pop phenomenon BTS and music legend Madonna in a performance curated by Coldplay frontman Chris Martin.
The production is being delivered in partnership with Global Citizen, Live Nation and Done + Dusted.
Beyond the halftime show, Grammy-nominated rapper Post Malone will headline the pre-match closing ceremony, while EGOT winner Jennifer Hudson will perform the United States national anthem before kick-off.
Acclaimed Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel, Coldplay, the PS22 Chorus and popular Sesame Street characters are also expected to feature in the celebrations.
FIFA’s decision to extend halftime has generated debate because IFAB’s Laws of the Game state that the halftime interval should not exceed 15 minutes unless competition regulations provide otherwise.
Critics argue that a prolonged break could disrupt the rhythm of the match and affect player preparation, while supporters believe the event will elevate the World Cup final into an entertainment spectacle comparable to the NFL’s Super Bowl.
The halftime show will also serve a philanthropic purpose by supporting the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, which aims to raise $100 million to expand access to education and football opportunities for children around the world.
With football’s biggest prize at stake and an unprecedented entertainment lineup featuring Burna Boy, Justin Bieber, Shakira, BTS and Madonna, the 2026 FIFA World Cup final is poised to become one of the most watched and talked-about sporting events in history.
