Tanzania pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a dramatic 2-1 victory over South Africa in their Group B clash on Monday in Casablanca, Morocco.
The Twiga Stars delivered a disciplined and spirited performance to earn a memorable three points against one of the tournament’s favourites and strengthen their hopes of reaching the knockout stage.
Tanzania took the lead in the 38th minute through Tosh Msewa, who finished clinically after a well-worked move.
South Africa responded just before halftime as Bambanani Mbane headed home the equaliser in first-half stoppage time to send both sides into the break level.
With the match seemingly heading for a draw, Tanzania struck late through Ubamba, whose tight-angle finish sealed a famous victory and sparked wild celebrations among the East Africans.
The result marks one of the biggest surprises of the tournament so far, handing Tanzania a massive boost in the race for a place in the quarter-finals while leaving South Africa with work to do in their remaining Group B fixtures.
In the other Group B match, Côte d’Ivoire produced an impressive attacking display to defeat Burkina Faso 4-1.
The Ivorians raced into a commanding 3-0 first-half lead before comfortably seeing out the contest to move level on points with Tanzania at the top of the group.
Attention now turns to Group C, where defending champions Nigeria begin the defence of their WAFCON crown against Malawi, while Zambia face Egypt in the other fixture as the battle for quarter-final places gathers momentum.
