WAFCON 2026: Super Falcons Must Stay Humble, Defend Title and Qualify for 2027 World Cup – Coach Justine Madugu
Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu has reiterated that Nigeria’s objectives at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) are clear, to successfully defend their continental crown and secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Speaking ahead of Nigeria’s Group C opener against Malawi in Morocco, Madugu said his team remains humble despite entering the competition as defending champions and record 10-time African champions.
The coach stressed that the Super Falcons will approach every match with maximum concentration, insisting that no opponent should be underestimated in a tournament of this magnitude.
“Our mission is to retain the WAFCON title and qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup,” Madugu said.
“We remain humble and focused, taking the competition one game at a time because every team here has earned the right to compete.”
The 2026 WAFCON also serves as Africa’s qualifying tournament for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. The four semi-finalists will qualify automatically, while another team will have the opportunity to secure a place through the intercontinental playoffs.
Nigeria begin their title defence in Group C alongside Malawi, Zambia and Egypt, with the Super Falcons chasing a record-extending 11th WAFCON title.
Madugu acknowledged that every nation will be eager to dethrone the defending champions but believes his players are mentally prepared for the challenge.
“Everybody is here with a purpose and a mission. We have great respect for every team because qualifying for this tournament is not easy. We won’t underrate anyone, especially Malawi,” he added.
The Super Falcons will rely on the experience of captain Rasheedat Ajibade, six-time African Women’s Player of the Year Asisat Oshoala and goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie as they begin another quest for continental glory.
Despite the absence of defender Ashleigh Plumptre through injury, Madugu expressed confidence in the quality and depth of his 25-player squad, combining experienced stars with emerging talents capable of delivering another successful campaign.
Nigeria will open their WAFCON 2026 campaign against Malawi before taking on Zambia and Egypt as they seek to defend their title and book their place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
