Usyk Vacates World Titles to Shape Own Future, Backs Anthony Joshua to Become Champion Again
Former undisputed heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk has explained that his decision to vacate his heavyweight world titles was driven by a desire to control the final chapter of his illustrious career, while also expressing confidence that Anthony Joshua can return to the top of the division.
The 39-year-old Ukrainian opted against defending his titles against mandatory challenger Agit Kabayel, relinquishing his belts to pave the way for a new generation of heavyweight champions.
According to Usyk’s manager, Sergey Lapin, the decision was deliberate and aimed at allowing the heavyweight division to move forward while giving Usyk the freedom to choose his final fight.
“He made the conscious decision to vacate his championship belts in order to bring new life to the heavyweight division,” Lapin said.
“It gives new champions the opportunity to prove themselves and help move the sport forward.
Now he wants to decide for himself what the final chapter of his career will look like, rather than allowing circumstances or mandatory title defences to make that decision for him.”
Usyk is reportedly considering one last heavyweight bout before retirement, with former WBC champion Deontay Wilder emerging as a potential opponent in the United States.
His decision has reshaped the heavyweight landscape, with Kabayel inheriting the WBC title, while Daniel Dubois already holds the WBO belt.
Rising contenders including Moses Itauma, Frank Sanchez and Murat Gassiev are also expected to challenge for world honours in the coming months.
Usyk also revealed his belief that Joshua can reclaim heavyweight supremacy. The pair, who have trained together in recent months despite their previous rivalry, maintain a close relationship.
“I don’t think Anthony will become undisputed. I know Anthony will become undisputed,” Usyk said.
“He’s not my rival, not my opponent, he’s my partner, my brother.
“Because I know this is a machine. Now, he must work. He must change. But I believe it’s possible.”
Joshua is expected to return to the ring later this month as he continues his pursuit of becoming a three-time heavyweight world champion, with a future showdown against Tyson Fury also on the horizon.
