FIFA World Cup 2026: Mbappe Scores Twice, Becomes Knockout Stage’s Highest Goalscorer as France Cruise into Round of 16

France underlined their status as one of the favourites to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a dominant 3-0 victory over Sweden, with captain Kylian Mbappe scoring twice to guide Les Bleus into the Round of 16.

The Real Madrid forward opened the scoring with a superbly taken goal before Bradley Barcola doubled France’s advantage. Mbappe then completed his brace to seal an emphatic win at New York New Jersey Stadium.

The victory set up a Round of 16 clash against Paraguay in Philadelphia, while France also became the first team to score at least three goals in five consecutive FIFA World Cup matches.

Mbappe’s two-goal display saw him draw level with Lionel Messi on six goals in the race for the tournament’s Golden Boot.

More significantly, the 27-year-old reached 18 FIFA World Cup goals, becoming the highest goalscorer in World Cup knockout-stage history after surpassing the previous record.

His opener carried extra emotion as he celebrated by embracing head coach Didier Deschamps, who had recently returned to the team after travelling home following the death of his mother.

The entire French squad joined the pair in a touching show of unity.
Deschamps praised the togetherness within his squad after the convincing victory.

“This group is united and they delivered when I was not here,” he said. “The team spirit of this group doesn’t make you win matches, but if you don’t have it, you can lose games. The collective strength is above everything.”

Midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni also revealed the players were motivated to lift their coach’s spirits.

“We know the coach is going through a lot, and we are trying to give everything to make him as happy as possible.”
France’s attacking quartet once again proved unstoppable.

Michael Olise provided two more assists to increase his tournament tally to five, while Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé continued his impressive campaign with another influential performance.

Mbappe and Dembélé have now combined for six goals during the tournament, the highest goal combination by any duo in FIFA World Cup history since records began in 1966.

France finished the match with 25 attempts on goal—their highest total in a World Cup game since 1998—and have now scored 13 goals in just four matches.

Former England defender Gary Neville described France as the benchmark for the rest of the competition.

“What we saw from France was precision and devastation. That front four will cause nightmares for every defender in the tournament. They are a level above.”

Former France captain Patrick Vieira echoed the sentiment, declaring Les Bleus “the team to beat,” while Sweden manager Graham Potter admitted there was “no disgrace” in losing to such an outstanding side.

Despite the growing hype surrounding his team, Deschamps urged caution.

“Please, slow down,” he said. “We have reached the Round of 16, but it’s only the Round of 16. We have to stay calm.”

France will now look to continue their impressive run when they face Paraguay for a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
