Thierry Henry Backs Victor Osimhen in Haaland Debate, Why Nigerian Deserves More

Former Arsenal and Barcelona striker Thierry Henry has thrown his weight behind Victor Osimhen in the debate over the world’s best strikers, insisting that the Nigerian international deserves to be mentioned alongside Manchester City’s Erling Haaland and other elite forwards.

Henry’s reported comments have reignited discussions about Osimhen’s standing in world football, particularly following his move from Napoli to Turkish champions Galatasaray.

The French football legend believes Osimhen possesses the qualities to compete with the game’s leading forwards and suggested that the Nigerian could reach another level if he played in a team with the creative resources available at Manchester City.

The comparison has also brought renewed attention to the question of how much a striker’s performances are influenced by the quality of his teammates, tactical system and the opportunities created around him.

Henry Questions the Haaland-Osimhen Comparison

While acknowledging Haaland’s outstanding goalscoring achievements at Manchester City, Henry believes Osimhen has the ability to produce comparable, if not greater, impact in a team built around his strengths.

The former France international suggested that Osimhen could flourish under Pep Guardiola, with the quality of City’s midfield and attacking players potentially providing the Nigerian with even more opportunities to demonstrate his finishing ability.

He also raised the question of whether Haaland would deliver the same level of output if he played for Galatasaray.

The argument is not necessarily a dismissal of Haaland’s achievements but an endorsement of Osimhen’s individual qualities and the need to assess strikers beyond their goalscoring statistics.

Osimhen’s Napoli Success Established His Elite Status

Osimhen’s credentials at the highest level are well established.

The 27-year-old played a pivotal role in Napoli’s historic 2022/23 Serie A title triumph, scoring 26 league goals to finish as the division’s leading marksman.

His achievement made him the first African player to win the Serie A Golden Boot and further strengthened his reputation as one of Europe’s most formidable centre-forwards.

His performances also earned him the 2023 African Player of the Year award and an eighth-place finish in the 2023 Ballon d’Or rankings.

Following his departure from Napoli, Osimhen continued his career at Galatasaray, initially joining on loan before completing a permanent transfer in July 2025.

He made an immediate impact in Turkey, recording 37 goals and eight assists in 41 appearances across all competitions during his first season, while helping Galatasaray secure domestic honours.

His continued productivity has reinforced the argument that his quality should not be judged solely by the league in which he currently plays.

Osimhen Deserves a Place Among Football’s Elite

Beyond his goalscoring ability, Osimhen offers a combination of physical strength, acceleration, aerial dominance, intelligent movement and relentless pressing that makes him a difficult opponent for defenders.

His ability to stretch defensive lines, compete in aerial situations and create opportunities for teammates gives him a different profile from several of the forwards with whom he is regularly compared.

Haaland remains one of the most prolific goalscorers in European football, while Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappé have also established themselves among the game’s outstanding attacking players.

However, Osimhen’s achievements at Napoli and Galatasaray provide a strong basis for including him in that conversation.

Can Osimhen Challenge for the Ballon d’Or?

For Osimhen, the next challenge is translating his individual excellence into sustained success on the biggest stages of European and international football.

A serious Ballon d’Or challenge would require consistent performances in elite competitions, major trophies and outstanding individual contributions over an entire season.

His eighth-place finish in 2023 demonstrated that he has already attracted recognition at the highest level of the game.

At 27, the Super Eagles forward still has time to strengthen his credentials and pursue even greater achievements.

Henry’s reported endorsement adds another prominent voice to the growing recognition of Osimhen’s ability.

Whether he is superior to Haaland remains a matter of football opinion, but there is little doubt that the Nigerian has established himself as one of the most accomplished centre-forwards of his generation and deserves serious consideration among the world’s elite strikers.
