Rasheedat Ajibade to Undergo Ankle Surgery in France, Faces Lengthy Layoff

Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade is scheduled to undergo ankle surgery in France on Friday, October 16, as the Nigerian international faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines that could keep her out for the remainder of 2026.

A close and reliable source told Sportsbeat.ng that the 27-year-old forward will undergo the procedure following the ankle injury she sustained during Nigeria’s 5-0 victory over Comoros in the second leg of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games qualifiers.

Ajibade suffered the injury in the 23rd minute of Tuesday’s encounter at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State, and was stretchered off after receiving treatment on the pitch.

Her departure forced a change in Nigeria’s attacking setup, with Folashade Ijamilusi introduced as her replacement.

The Super Falcons eventually completed a 7-0 aggregate victory to advance to the next round of the Olympic qualifying campaign, but the loss of their captain raised concerns over her immediate playing future.

Surgery Scheduled for Friday

The planned operation in France marks a significant step in the treatment of Ajibade’s ankle injury, with the forward now facing an extended recovery period.

Super Falcons interim coach Augustine Eguavoen disclosed after Tuesday’s match that Ajibade had been taken to the hospital for an MRI scan to establish the extent of the injury.

The outcome has necessitated further medical intervention, with surgery scheduled for Friday.

Although the exact duration of her rehabilitation will depend on her recovery, the latest information available to Sportsbeat.ng indicates that Ajibade could be unavailable for the remainder of the year.

Major Setback for Super Falcons Captain

Ajibade is one of the most influential players in the Nigerian women’s national team, combining attacking quality, tireless work rate and leadership.

Her potential absence for the rest of 2026 represents a significant setback as she begins the process of surgery and rehabilitation.

The immediate priority will be a successful operation and a carefully managed recovery programme to help the forward regain full fitness before returning to competitive football.
