The ongoing renovation of Shagamu Stadium in Ogun State is expected to position Nigeria for a new chapter in athletics development, with plans to transform the facility into the country’s first stadium dedicated exclusively to athletics.
The project, being executed through a partnership between the Ogun State Government and the National Sports Commission (NSC), is expected to be completed next year and will feature modern facilities designed to meet the requirements of major international athletics competitions.
Beyond the rehabilitation of the existing infrastructure, the redevelopment will introduce specialised facilities, including a dedicated warm-up area, a medical centre and other essential support infrastructure to provide athletes with a comprehensive training and competition environment.
Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, described the project as part of the Federal Government’s broader efforts to reposition sports infrastructure and improve Nigeria’s capacity to host major sporting events.
According to Olopade, the Shagamu project is among more than 30 stadium renovation and sports infrastructure projects currently ongoing across the country.
“Shagamu Stadium is one of the major projects we are undertaking in our determination to reposition sports infrastructure in Nigeria. What we are doing here goes beyond giving the stadium a facelift. We are creating a dedicated athletics facility that will provide our athletes with the right environment to train and compete,” Olopade said.
He explained that the collaboration between the NSC and the Ogun State Government was aimed at delivering an athletics facility capable of meeting international competition standards.
“We want a facility where athletes can prepare properly before competitions, access the necessary medical support and enjoy the facilities expected of a modern athletics stadium. These are important considerations if Nigeria wants to attract and successfully host major international championships,” he added.
The inclusion of specialised training and competition facilities is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s ability to bid for continental and international athletics championships while providing home-based athletes with improved opportunities to prepare for major competitions.
For Ogun State, the project also represents an opportunity to expand its role in Nigerian sports development, attract international sporting events and create opportunities for athletes, coaches, technical officials and other sports professionals.
The planned completion next year will be a significant milestone if the project delivers on its ambition of providing Nigeria with a purpose-built athletics stadium.
At a time when Nigeria is seeking to improve its athletics infrastructure and strengthen its presence on the international stage, the Shagamu project could provide an important platform for talent development, elite competition and the growth of the sport.
