Arokodare Scores Twice, Etim Nets as Nigerian Stars Make European Impact; Yusuf Sees Red Against AC Milan

0

Nigerian footballers produced a mixed but eventful set of performances in Thursday’s UEFA Europa League and Conference League action, with Tolu Arokodare leading the way through a two-goal display for Ajax, Friday Etim also finding the net for Midtjylland, and Bamidele Yusuf sent off in Ferencváros’ impressive victory over AC Milan.

The night’s action offered a combination of individual milestones and contrasting team fortunes, as Nigerian players featured prominently across the two European competitions.

Arokodare Leads Nigerian Goal Scorers

Tolu Arokodare delivered the standout Nigerian performance, scoring twice as Ajax secured a commanding 6-1 away victory over Midtjylland in the UEFA Conference League.

The Nigerian striker found the net in the ninth minute to give Ajax an early advantage before Midtjylland responded through compatriot Friday Etim in the 28th minute.

Arokodare struck again in the 52nd minute to restore Ajax’s lead, setting the visitors on their way to an emphatic victory.

Owen Wijndal, Davy Klaassen, Oscar Gloukh and Marcos Leonardo added further goals to complete the rout, while Midtjylland’s task was made more difficult by Kjell Wätjen’s first-half dismissal.

Despite the heavy defeat, Etim’s goal provided a positive individual contribution for the Danish side.

Yusuf Dismissed as Ferencváros Defeat AC Milan

Bamidele Yusuf endured a difficult evening despite Ferencváros recording one of their most significant results of the campaign, defeating AC Milan 2-0 at San Siro in the UEFA Europa League.

Lenny Joseph was the match-winner, scoring twice in the second half to put the Hungarian visitors firmly in control.

Joseph opened the scoring in the 52nd minute and doubled the advantage in the 66th, giving Ferencváros a comfortable cushion against their Italian opponents.

Yusuf, who came on as a substitute in the 67th minute, was sent off in the 77th minute following an off-the-ball incident, leaving Ferencváros to negotiate the closing stages with 10 men.

The visitors nevertheless maintained their defensive discipline to preserve the advantage and claim a notable away victory.

Dessers Features in Panathinaikos Win

Cyriel Dessers also featured in the Conference League, coming off the bench as Panathinaikos defeated CSKA Sofia 2-1.

Davide Calabria gave the Greek side the lead in the 41st minute, but Dinis Almeida equalised for the visitors before half-time.

Vicente Taborda restored Panathinaikos’ advantage in the 68th minute, with Dessers introduced eight minutes later as the hosts protected their lead.

The Nigerian forward’s late appearance added another contribution to the country’s representation in Thursday’s European fixtures.

Onuachu Plays Full Match in Trabzonspor Defeat

Paul Onuachu completed 90 minutes for Trabzonspor but could not prevent the Turkish side from losing 1-0 at home to Freiburg.

Lukas Kübler scored the decisive goal in the 14th minute, handing the German visitors all three points.

Onuachu remained on the pitch throughout the encounter as Trabzonspor searched for a response but could not find a way past Freiburg’s defence.

Nigerian Players’ Performances: The Verdict

Arokodare’s brace was the defining Nigerian contribution of the evening, underlining his importance to Ajax’s attacking output. Etim also made his presence felt with a goal, although Midtjylland’s defensive collapse overshadowed his effort.

Yusuf’s dismissal provided the night’s major disciplinary talking point, while Dessers contributed to Panathinaikos’ victory and Onuachu completed a full shift in Trabzonspor’s defeat.

Overall, it was a night of contrasting fortunes for Nigerian players in European football, with goals, a red card and mixed team results shaping their latest continental engagements.
