Nigerian Runners Hit Jackpot as Great Abeokuta 10KM Race Returns with Full Elite Prize Purse, Foreign Stars Locked Out
Nilayo Sports Management Limited (NSML), Africa’s leading sports marketing and event management company, has officially announced the return of the Great Abeokuta 10KM Race after a one-year break.
The prestigious road race will make its much-anticipated comeback on Saturday, September 26, 2026, with a bold new direction that places Nigerian athletes firmly at the centre of the event.
In a landmark move aimed at boosting homegrown athletics, the 2026 edition will be exclusively open to Nigerian runners, ending the dominance of foreign competitors and creating a rare opportunity for local long-distance athletes to battle for top honours.
Despite the domestic-only format, organisers have retained the race’s elite prize purse without any reduction, ensuring Nigerian runners will compete for the same lucrative rewards previously contested by international elite athletes.
Explaining the vision behind the decision, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Nilayo Sports Management Limited, Mrs. Yetunde Olopade, said the organisers wanted this year’s edition to directly reward Nigeria’s finest athletes.
“The Great Abeokuta 10KM Race has always been a cultural and athletic celebration for Ogun State and Nigeria as a whole.
“Following our decision to skip the event last year, we wanted to return with an edition that directly empowers our own athletes. By making this a strictly domestic race while keeping our premium prize purse completely intact, we are ensuring that Nigeria’s finest runners are rewarded commensurately.
“Our athletes put in world-class effort, and this year, they will receive the world-class rewards they deserve.”
As in previous editions, participants will race through the scenic and culturally significant streets of Abeokuta, tackling the iconic 10-kilometre route renowned for its rich heritage and demanding undulating terrain.
Registration for the 2026 Great Abeokuta 10KM Race opened on Wednesday, July 15, and remains free for all participants, underscoring NSML’s commitment to grassroots sports development, youth empowerment and healthy living.
Interested runners can register online via AbeokutaMarathon.com, while physical registration forms are also available at designated centres across Abeokuta, including the MKO Abiola Stadium.
