Nigeria vs Spain: Falconets Seek Africa’s First Victory at 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup

Nigeria’s Falconets will begin their campaign at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland on Monday with a high-profile Group F clash against Spain, as the seven-time African champions aim to secure the continent’s first victory at the tournament.

The Falconets, who arrived in Poland after a series of preparation matches, will take on the former world champions at the Stadion Sosnowiec from 4pm Nigerian time in what promises to be one of the biggest fixtures of the opening round.

With Ghana suffering a heavy 3-0 defeat to Ecuador and Tanzania losing 4-1 to Brazil in their opening matches, Nigeria now carries Africa’s hopes of recording the first win for the continent at the competition.

Host nation Poland opened the tournament with an impressive 3-0 victory over Argentina in Group A, while Brazil began strongly with a 4-1 win over Tanzania in Group B. Benin Republic, making history at the global tournament, earned a valuable 2-2 draw against Mexico after a late comeback.

Elsewhere, Canada and England settled for a 1-1 draw, France and South Korea also shared the spoils in Group C, while Japan edged New Zealand 2-1.

Italy completed Matchday Two action with a 2-1 victory over the United States.
Nigeria head coach Moses Aduku has urged his players to approach the encounter against Spain with maximum determination, describing the game as a “Cup final.”

“We are looking forward to the match against Spain with high expectations. We are ready and set to go. Spain is a good side, no doubt, but we will approach the game like a Cup final because we want to win,” Aduku said.

The Falconets have a proud history at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, finishing as runners-up in 2010 and 2014, becoming the first African team to reach the final of the competition.

Spain, meanwhile, are among the favourites for the title, having won the tournament in 2022 after finishing runners-up in 2018.

Victory on Monday would not only give Nigeria a perfect start in Group F but also hand Africa its first triumph at Poland 2026.

The Falconets will also face China and New Caledonia in their remaining group matches.
