Leeds Move Third as Calvert-Lewin Leads Newcastle Demolition

Leeds United moved up to third place in the Premier League after producing an impressive 4-1 victory over Newcastle United at Elland Road on Monday night.

Daniel Farke’s side delivered a dominant performance, scoring three times in a blistering 14-minute spell before adding a fourth after the interval to condemn Newcastle to a heavy defeat.

Lewis Miley’s own goal opened the scoring in the 32nd minute after Ao Tanaka’s effort took a double deflection before finding the bottom corner.

Leeds doubled their advantage just two minutes and 42 seconds later when Jayden Bogle got the final touch on a header that had initially appeared destined for Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Calvert-Lewin then got his deserved goal in first-half stoppage time, calmly finishing across goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek to give Leeds a commanding 3-0 lead at the break.

The former Everton striker was central to Leeds’ attacking display and continued his impressive record against Newcastle, taking his career tally against the Magpies to eight goals.

Noah Okafor added Leeds’ fourth in the 59th minute, effectively ending any hope of a Newcastle comeback.

Bazoumana Toure scored a consolation goal for Newcastle in the 90th minute, but it was little more than a footnote on a difficult night for Matthias Jaissle’s team.

Calvert-Lewin was named Player of the Match with a rating of 8.62, while Bogle and Okafor also earned ratings above eight.

The result leaves Leeds third with eight points from their opening four matches, behind only Manchester City and leaders Arsenal.

For Leeds, the unbeaten start represents a major boost following their 14th-place finish last season after returning to the Premier League. Farke’s men have recorded two wins and two draws so far.

Elland Road is also proving difficult for visiting teams, with Leeds’ last home defeat coming on March 3.

For Newcastle, the result exposes defensive weaknesses that Jaissle will have to address quickly.

The Magpies had made an encouraging start to the campaign, collecting five points from their first three matches, but were unable to cope with Leeds’ physicality and attacking intensity.

Leeds registered 16 attempts on Newcastle’s goal and could have won by an even wider margin, leaving Jaissle with plenty of work to do ahead of Newcastle’s next Premier League fixture.
