Kun Khalifat FC could be heading for a change of ownership after the Imo State-based NPFL club confirmed that its majority shares are being offered to a prospective investor.
The club’s president, Amaefula Michael, disclosed the development in a letter to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), stating that the club is “in the process of handing over the majority shares of the company to a prospective buyer.”
Kun Khalifat subsequently requested the NPFL to commence the process for the ownership transfer.
But while the club may change hands, the NPFL has drawn the line at any attempt to sell or transfer its league status.
NPFL Chairman Gbenga Elegbeleye made the position clear on Friday while speaking with journalists at the 2025/2026 NPFL Annual General Meeting and draw for the new season in Ibadan.
Elegbeleye said he was unaware of any fresh proposal from Kun Khalifat to sell its NPFL slot, but confirmed that the club had made a similar request last season when it was battling relegation.
That proposal, according to the NPFL chairman, was rejected.
The league chief stressed that clubs cannot simply buy their way into the NPFL, particularly relegated clubs seeking a return to the top flight without going through the promotion process.
“We don’t allow the transfer or sale of promoted clubs to that of relegated clubs. You must play your way up, not buy your way back,” Elegbeleye said.
The development creates a delicate situation for Kun Khalifat, as any ownership change before the new season would still have to comply with NPFL regulations.
If the proposed transaction is completed, the new owners may also face restrictions regarding any immediate change to the club’s name or identity.
Kun Khalifat are scheduled to compete in the 2026/2027 NPFL season and will open their campaign against Abia Warriors.
Sportsbeat.ng can also exclusively confirm that Kun Khalifat FC are represented at the ongoing NPFL AGM in Ibadan.
