EuroMatch NPFL Week 9: Rivers United Mount Summit Despite Barau Stalemate

Rivers United reclaimed top spot in the 2026/27 EuroMatch Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) after playing out a goalless draw against Barau FC in Port Harcourt on Monday morning, following the completion of their rain-disrupted Week 9 encounter.

The match, which began on Sunday evening, was halted after 75 minutes because of heavy rainfall, forcing both teams to return on Monday to play the remaining 15 minutes.

Neither side could find a breakthrough during the resumed period, leaving Rivers United to settle for a point at home. However, the result was enough to move the Pride of Rivers to the summit with 17 points from nine matches.

Rivers United have now recorded four victories and five draws without defeat, maintaining their unbeaten start to the campaign. Their defensive record remains particularly impressive, with only two goals conceded in nine league matches.

Despite their rise to the top, the draw represented another missed opportunity for Finidi George’s side to strengthen their position in the title race, particularly after Rangers International’s continental commitments left them with a game in hand.

Olanrewaju rues missed opportunities

Rivers United assistant coach Yemi Olanrewaju expressed disappointment over his side’s failure to convert their chances, insisting that the team would recover from the dropped points.

“We had two glaring chances we could have converted in the first half before they resorted to time-wasting because they didn’t come here to play,” Olanrewaju said after the match.

The assistant coach, who works alongside head coach Finidi George, remained confident that the result would not derail Rivers United’s ambitions.

“We will bounce back. It’s a marathon; there is no big deal. We’ve also gone out to pick points elsewhere. We will be back to winning ways,” he added.

His comments reflected Rivers United’s frustration at failing to make home advantage count, although their unbeaten record and defensive consistency remain significant positives.

What the result means for the NPFL title race

Rivers United’s return to the summit puts pressure on Rangers International, who have 17 points from eight matches and can reclaim outright first place with a victory in their outstanding fixture against Bendel Insurance.

Sporting Lagos occupy third position on 15 points after their impressive 3-2 away victory over Plateau United, while Plateau, Barau FC, Nasarawa United, Kano Pillars and Doma United are clustered on 14 points.

Barau FC will also take encouragement from the result. The Kano-based side moved to 14 points after recording their fifth draw of the campaign, remaining firmly within the chasing pack despite missing the opportunity to close the gap on the leaders.

For Rivers United, the immediate challenge is to turn their remarkable resilience into more victories. Five draws in nine matches underline their difficulty in converting competitive performances into maximum points, even as their defence continues to provide a solid foundation.

The league remains finely poised, with Rangers holding a game in hand and several clubs within three points of the leaders. Rivers United may be top, but their position is far from secure as the race for the 2026/27 NPFL title gathers momentum.
