Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, reignited their hopes of qualifying for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup after battling to a hard-fought 84-81 victory over African powerhouse Tunisia in their opening Group C qualifier in Luanda of the new qualifiers window, Angola, on Thursday.

The victory also marked a winning start for new head coach David Fizdale, who saw his side display resilience, composure and timely shot-making to edge one of the continent’s strongest basketball nations.

Fast Start Sets the Tone

D’Tigers came out aggressively, taking the opening quarter 23-21 through energetic ball movement and efficient transition offense.

Tunisia responded in the second quarter, outscoring Nigeria 23-20 to level the contest at halftime with the North Africans holding a slim 44-43 advantage.

Nigeria Responds After the Break

The third quarter proved decisive as Nigeria tightened defensively while finding better offensive rhythm.

D’Tigers won the period 21-19 to reclaim a one-point lead heading into the final quarter.

With the game delicately poised, Nigeria held their nerve in the closing minutes, edging the final quarter 20-18 to secure an impressive 84-81 victory.

Balanced Team Effort Delivers Victory

Unlike previous outings where Nigeria relied heavily on individual brilliance, D’Tigers produced a balanced offensive display with four players scoring in double figures.

Ike Iroegbu led Nigeria with 17 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists.
Chimezie Metu added 17 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists.

William Iwundu contributed 14 points and 5 rebounds.
Uchenna Iroegbu finished with 13 points and a game-high 6 assists, orchestrating Nigeria’s offense.

For Tunisia, Omar Abada and Fares Lahiani scored 21 points each, but their efforts were not enough to prevent defeat.

Numbers Behind the Win

Although Tunisia shot slightly better from the field (42% to Nigeria’s 39%), D’Tigers created more scoring opportunities through greater attacking intent.

Field Goals Made: Nigeria 26, Tunisia 22

Three-Pointers Made:

Nigeria 12, Tunisia 8
Total Rebounds: 39-39

Huge Boost to World Cup Qualification

Defeating Tunisia—one of Africa’s traditional basketball heavyweights—is a significant statement from David Fizdale’s rejuvenated D’Tigers.

Beyond the valuable points earned, the victory injects fresh belief into Nigeria’s qualification campaign and strengthens their chances of securing a place at the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

If D’Tigers can maintain this level of defensive intensity, balanced scoring and composure in crunch moments, they will be strong contenders to progress from the African qualifiers and return to basketball’s biggest stage.
