FIFA World Cup: Ghana, England Secure Round of 32 Spots Before Final Group Matches
Ghana and England have officially qualified for the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup before playing their final Group L matches.
The two nations booked their places in the knockout stage after results elsewhere guaranteed that four points would be enough to progress under FIFA’s expanded 48-team tournament format.
England confirmed qualification after Spain’s 1-0 victory over Uruguay on Saturday mathematically ensured the Three Lions would finish with at least one of the tournament’s best third-placed records, regardless of the outcome of their final group game against Panama.
Thomas Tuchel’s side opened their campaign with an impressive 4-2 victory over Croatia before playing out a goalless draw against Ghana to move onto four points.
Ghana also sealed passage to the knockout rounds before facing Croatia in their final group fixture.
The Black Stars earned a 1-0 win over Panama on matchday one before holding England to a 0-0 draw, leaving them on four points.
The Black Stars are through to the World Cup knockout stage for the first time since their memorable run at the 2010 tournament in South Africa.
With qualification already secured, Ghana’s clash against Croatia and England’s meeting with Panama will now determine the final Group L standings, including who finishes as group winners, runners-up, or among the qualified third-placed teams.
As things stand, England top Group L on four points with a superior goal difference, while Ghana are second on the same number of points.
Croatia remain on three points and still have a chance of qualifying, while Panama have been eliminated after losing their opening two matches.
The expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup allows the top two teams from each of the 12 groups, along with the eight best third-placed teams, to advance to the Round of 32.
