Multiple Nigeria Champions Patience Okon George Reflects on Her Life-Changing Decision to Drop Football For Athletics
Nigerian 400m star Patience Okon George recently declared that choosing athletics over football remains the best decision of her life. The 34-year-old multiple-time African champion made this revelation during an interview at the AFN Commonwealth Games Trials, where she secured the women’s 400m title.
In the interview, Okon George reflected on her early aspirations of becoming a football player. Initially, she balanced her passion for both sports but ultimately faced a pivotal choice. “At first, running on the track was not my goal because I was playing football while also doing athletics,” she shared.
Coach Ogunike’s Ultimatum Led to a Life-Altering Choice
Okon George’s journey took a significant turn when her coach, Coach Ogunike, presented her with an ultimatum: decide between football and athletics. “One day, I was at the football field when he called me and asked, ‘Patience, which event do you want to choose?’” she recalled. Despite her initial commitment to football, circumstances prompted her to return home, believing football was her true calling.
However, her hiatus from athletics was short-lived. “One day, he came to my school and told me to return to athletics,” she explained. With her father’s encouragement, she decided to give athletics another chance, a move that transformed her life.
Gratitude for the Coach Who Redirected Her Path
Reflecting on her career, Okon George expressed deep gratitude for Coach Ogunike, who played a pivotal role in her success. “Without him, I don’t think I would have returned to athletics,” she stated. She emphasized that Coach Ogunike guided her back to her true potential and helped her achieve her dreams.
Since her return to athletics, Okon George has enjoyed sustained success, consistently ranking among the top competitors in her field. “I know I have achieved a lot in track and field. I doubt I would have reached this level if I had continued playing football,” she affirmed.
