EuroMatch NPFL: Shooting Stars, Salisu Yusuf Struggle Deepen as Pillars Pick First Point in 9 Years in Ibadan
Shooting Stars’ struggles deepened on Wednesday as Kano Pillars secured a 0–0 draw at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan, leaving the hosts winless in their last four EuroMatch Nigeria Premier Football League matches.
The result was particularly significant for Pillars, who picked up their first point against Shooting Stars in Ibadan in nine years.
The Sai Masu Gida had lost on each of their previous four visits to the Oluyole Warriors since their last positive result — another goalless draw recorded on June 7, 2017.
Pillars extended their unbeaten start to the season to seven matches with the result, having recorded two wins and five draws.
For Shooting Stars, however, the draw compounded a growing problem in front of goal.
The hosts enjoyed 65 per cent possession and created opportunities, but again lacked the cutting edge to turn their dominance into victory.
Their best early chance came in the ninth minute when Friday Ubong’s header was cleared off the line, while Pillars remained disciplined to frustrate the home side throughout.
The goalless draw also marked Shooting Stars’ second consecutive 0–0 result at home, following the stalemate against Nasarawa United on Sunday.
The mounting frustration has now placed increased pressure on coach Salisu Yusuf, with supporters expressing their displeasure after the game and calling for changes in the technical setup.
Yusuf’s side have now gone four matches without a win, a run that has exposed their struggles to convert possession and chances into goals.
While Pillars celebrated a valuable away point and a significant psychological boost, Shooting Stars were left to reflect on another missed opportunity to revive their campaign.
Pillars moved to 11 points from seven matches, while Shooting Stars have eight points.
Shooting Stars will have an immediate opportunity to respond when they visit Kun Khalifat on Sunday, while Kano Pillars travel to Jos to face Plateau United.
For Yusuf, the Kun Khalifat fixture now carries added significance as pressure grows for Shooting Stars to turn their performances into results.
