Nigeria’s Kashope Eyituoyo Obatoyinbo has achieved a significant milestone in the country’s swimming history after finishing sixth in the men’s 50m Freestyle final at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games.
The Nigerian swimmer clocked 23.43 seconds in Wednesday’s final, improving on his heats performance to secure a place among the top six competitors in the event.
Obatoyinbo’s qualification for the final was particularly impressive. After tying for eighth position in the heats with the Bahamas’ Christon Joseph in 23.67 seconds, he was required to contest a swim-off for the final qualification spot.
The 16-year-old responded under pressure, clocking 23.55 seconds to win the swim-off by just 0.01 seconds and secure his place in the final.
He subsequently delivered another improved performance, recording 23.43 seconds to finish sixth in the final, just 0.08 seconds behind fifth-placed Lee Han of Chinese Taipei.
Czech Republic’s Zdenek Prochazka won the gold medal in 22.54 seconds, while Jaden Mills of Trinidad and Tobago claimed silver in 22.99 seconds. Cyprus’ Andrew Marcus Laghoutis completed the podium with a time of 23.04 seconds.
Obatoyinbo’s achievement is a notable moment for Nigerian swimming, as he became the first Nigerian swimmer to reach a final at the Youth Olympic Games.
His campaign in Dakar also included the men’s 100m Freestyle, where he finished 29th among 73 competitors with a time of 53.81 seconds.
Although he missed out on a medal, reaching the final and finishing sixth represents an important achievement for the young Nigerian, particularly against a field of emerging international swimming talents.
At 16, Obatoyinbo has demonstrated considerable promise and provided an encouraging indication of what the future could hold for Nigerian swimming.
An Olympic final appearance is no small achievement. Obatoyinbo has every reason to hold his head high.
