Billie Jean King Cup 2026: Nigeria Edge Burundi, Begins Africa Group III on a Winning Note

Nigeria kicked off its 2026 Billie Jean King Cup Africa Group III campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Burundi in Gaborone, Botswana, boosting its hopes of securing promotion to Africa Group II.

Team Nigeria made a bright start as the country’s highest-ranked player, Khadijat Mohammed, delivered a composed performance to win the opening singles match and hand the team a 1-0 lead.

Burundi responded strongly in the second singles encounter, drawing level at 1-1 to force the tie into a decisive doubles match.

With promotion ambitions on the line, Nigeria’s experienced pairing of Oyinlomo Quadre and Success Ogunjobi produced an impressive display of teamwork and resilience to defeat their Burundian opponents in the deciding rubber.

Ogunjobi sealed the victory with a powerful forehand winner, sparking celebrations from the Nigerian camp as the team wrapped up a deserved 2-1 triumph.

The opening-day success gives Nigeria valuable momentum in the 11-nation tournament, where only the top two teams will earn promotion to Africa Group II.

Coached by Rotimi Akinloye, Team Nigeria will now shift attention to its remaining fixtures, aware that every tie will be crucial in the race for one of the coveted promotion spots.

The Billie Jean King Cup remains the world’s premier international women’s team tennis competition.

Nigeria’s winning start represents an encouraging step towards returning to a higher tier of African women’s tennis.
