Super Falcons defender Ashley Plumptre has dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming she complained about being left out of Nigeria’s squad for the upcoming 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
She describing the posts as the handiwork of fake accounts impersonating her.
The viral post, which surfaced on Facebook, falsely alleged that the Saudi Arabia-based defender was unhappy after being omitted from the Super Falcons team set to defend Nigeria’s continental crown in Morocco later this year.
Reacting to the development on Tuesday, Plumptre warned fans and the public against engaging with fake accounts operating in her name.“Awful false accounts. I’ve posted on my IG and X for people to report.
They are using my identity and scamming people,” Plumptre said.“I’m currently contacting someone in Saudi Arabia to help me take these accounts down because this has been happening for well over a year now.””
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) also moved swiftly to debunk the report, stressing that the defender is not on Facebook and has repeatedly warned about impersonators using her identity online.
According to the NFF’s Director of Competitions, Ruth David, the claims attributed to Plumptre were entirely fabricated.
“This is totally false. Last year, Ashley Plumptre made a video in which she categorically said that she is not on Facebook and that some individuals have been impersonating her,” David stated.
She further noted that reports of Plumptre’s exclusion were baseless, as no official squad list has yet been submitted for the forthcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
“The coach has not submitted any list of players for the Women AFCON, so the scamster got it all wrong,” David added.
The federation also recalled similar fake stories involving Super Falcons stars Esther Okoronkwo and Asisat Oshoala, urging journalists and media organisations to verify information before publishing or sharing it.
The NFF expressed concern over the increasing spread of misinformation involving national team players and called on media practitioners and the public to uphold standards of accuracy and credibility.
Nigeria’s Super Falcons are preparing to defend their WAFCON title at the tournament scheduled to hold in Morocco later this year.
