World Cup 2026: Haaland, Kane Set for Epic Norway vs England Quarter-Final Clash
England and Norway battle for a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-finals on Saturday in Miami, with Erling Haaland and Harry Kane expected to headline a mouthwatering European showdown.
The highly anticipated quarter-final will be played at the Hard Rock Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 10:00pm Nigerian time.
The winner will book a last-four clash against either Argentina or Switzerland.
Norway have emerged as one of the surprise packages of the tournament.
After finishing second behind France in the group stage, StÃ¥le Solbakken’s side eliminated Côte d’Ivoire before stunning five-time champions Brazil 2-1 to reach their first-ever World Cup quarter-final.
England, under Thomas Tuchel, have also taken a dramatic route to the last eight.
The Three Lions defeated DR Congo in the Round of 32 before overcoming co-hosts Mexico 3-2 despite finishing the match with 10 men following Jarell Quansah’s dismissal.
The suspension of Quansah has handed Tuchel a major defensive headache, with Djed Spence expected to deputise at right-back. Veteran midfielder Jordan Henderson has also been ruled out for the remainder of the tournament after suffering a fractured wrist.
However, England have received encouraging news with Declan Rice and Marc Guéhi expected to recover in time after both trained on modified schedules during the week.
Norway have fewer selection concerns.
Julian Ryerson is set to continue at right-back after returning from injury against Brazil, while Marcus Pedersen is available again after recovering from illness.
The biggest talking point will be the duel between Norway’s prolific striker Erling Haaland and England captain Harry Kane.
Haaland has been the tournament’s standout forward with seven goals in five matches, forming a devastating partnership with captain Martin Ødegaard and Alexander Sørloth.
England will rely on Kane, who has already scored six goals, alongside Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka to unlock a Norwegian defence that has conceded nine goals in the competition.
Expected line-ups:
Norway: Nyland; Ryerson, Ajer, Østigård, Heggem; Berg, Berge, Ødegaard; Sørloth, Haaland, Nusa.
England: Pickford; Spence, Guéhi, Stones, O’Reilly; Anderson, Rice; Saka, Bellingham, Gordon; Kane.
Statistical models slightly favour England to progress, with their tournament experience and squad depth expected to prove decisive.
However, Norway’s fearless performances and Haaland’s clinical finishing make them dangerous underdogs capable of producing another major upset.
A closely contested encounter is expected, with England holding a slight edge and secure a place in the FIFA World Cup semi-finals.
