Why Shooting Stars Hired Former Super Eagles Coach Salisu Yusuf
Shooting Stars Sports Club have explained the decision to appoint former Super Eagles coach Salisu Yusuf as their new Technical Adviser ahead of the 2026/27 season.
The Ibadan-based club believe Yusuf’s extensive experience, knowledge of Nigerian football and proven record of developing local talent make him the right man to strengthen their technical setup.
Yusuf arrives at the Oluyole Warriors with more than two decades of coaching experience. Since beginning his managerial career with Nasarawa United in 2002, he has worked with several top Nigerian clubs, including Kano Pillars, Rangers International and Enyimba.
His most recent club assignment was with Coton Sport in Benin, further adding international experience to his coaching profile.
At national-team level, Yusuf has also been involved with the Super Eagles, serving as an assistant coach before taking charge of the Super Eagles B and Nigeria U-23 teams.
His biggest achievement with the home-based national team came in 2018 when he led the Super Eagles B to the final of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Morocco.
For Shooting Stars, however, his ability to identify, develop and maximise the potential of Nigerian players appears to be a major attraction.
The club said Yusuf’s “wealth of experience, deep understanding of Nigerian football and proven ability to work with and develop homegrown talent” were key factors behind the appointment.
Shooting Stars are also banking on his tactical knowledge and leadership qualities to help the club compete strongly in domestic football while preparing for continental challenges.
The appointment therefore represents more than a change in the technical department, with Shooting Stars expecting Yusuf to bring experience, structure and a winning mentality to the Oluyole Warriors.
The club has welcomed the former Super Eagles coach and expressed confidence that his experience will help drive its ambitions in the new campaign.
Salisu Yusuf is expected to consolidate the effort of former Coach Nurudeen Aweroro, who took the team to their finish in over over two decades just after a season.
