WAFU B U20 Championship: Flying Eagles Thrash Ghana to Launch Title Defence in Style
Nigeria’s Flying Eagles made a sensational start to the defence of their WAFU B U20 Championship crown with a commanding 4-2 victory over arch-rivals Ghana in their Group B opener on Monday in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire.
The defending champions produced an entertaining attacking display, overwhelming the Black Satellites with four well-taken goals to secure all three points and strengthen their bid for back-to-back regional titles.
The Flying Eagles took the initiative from the opening whistle and were rewarded when Olayemi Ayinla fired Nigeria into the lead.
Their dominance continued as Oraro Lucky calmly doubled the advantage, putting Ghana on the back foot early in the contest.
Ghana responded by reducing the deficit to keep the encounter alive, but Nigeria quickly regained control.
Abdulmuiz Adeleke confidently converted from the penalty spot to restore the two-goal cushion and ensure the Flying Eagles headed into the halftime break with a comfortable 3-1 lead.
The Nigerian youngsters maintained their attacking intensity after the restart and added a fourth goal to effectively seal the contest.
Their pace, movement, and clinical finishing proved too much for the Black Satellites, who struggled to cope with the relentless pressure.
Although Ghana grabbed a late consolation goal, it did little to alter the outcome as Nigeria comfortably held on for an impressive 4-2 triumph in one of West Africa’s biggest youth football rivalries.
The victory gives the Flying Eagles an ideal start in Group B, where Burkina Faso and Togo are also competing for a place in the knockout stage.
The result puts Nigeria in a strong position as they continue their quest to successfully defend the title they claimed at the previous edition.
Head coach Abdu Maikaba will be encouraged by his team’s attacking efficiency and overall performance, although he will look to tighten the defence after conceding twice.
With the WAFU B U20 Championship also serving as the qualifying tournament for the CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations, the Flying Eagles know the importance of maintaining their momentum.
Nigeria will next face Burkina Faso before concluding the group stage against Togo as they chase another regional title and a place at the continental championship.
