Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have been handed a tough semi-final test against hosts Côte d’Ivoire after Burkina Faso ended their perfect run with a 2-0 defeat on Sunday.
The defending champions were brought down to earth by a ruthless Burkina Faso side that struck twice in the first half to secure top spot in Group B and end Nigeria’s winning streak.
The Young Stallions broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute, capitalising on a corner-kick situation as a powerful header beat the Nigerian goalkeeper.
Nigeria struggled to find a response and were punished again just 13 minutes later when Burkina Faso doubled their advantage with a superbly struck long-range free-kick.
Despite trailing by two goals, the Flying Eagles could not find a way back into the contest after the interval, as Burkina Faso remained organised and frustrated Nigeria’s attacking efforts.
The defeat brought an abrupt end to Nigeria’s impressive start to the competition.
The Flying Eagles had opened their campaign with a thrilling 4-2 victory over Ghana before producing another commanding performance in a 3-0 win against Togo.
Those results had raised hopes of another dominant display against Burkina Faso, but the Young Stallions proved a different proposition and deservedly claimed first place in the group with seven points.
Nigeria finished second and will now face a formidable Côte d’Ivoire side in the last four.
The hosts topped Group A and will have the added advantage of playing in familiar surroundings when they meet the Flying Eagles on Wednesday, August 5.
In the other semi-final, Burkina Faso will face Niger, who finished second in Group A.
The semi-final winners will qualify for the final where the eventual winner will secure a place at the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, adding further significance to the decisive encounters.
For the Flying Eagles, Sunday’s defeat represents more than just the end of their winning run. It is a test of their character, resilience and ability to respond when the pressure is at its highest.
Nigeria must put the setback behind them quickly and rediscover the attacking intensity that produced seven goals in their opening two matches.
With a place in the final and qualification for the 2027 U-20 AFCON on the line, the Flying Eagles cannot afford another off-colour performance.
