WAFU B U-20 Final: Flying Eagles Battle Burkina Faso for Title, 2027 AFCON Ticket
Nigeria’s Flying Eagles will face Burkina Faso in a winner-takes-all final of the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship, with the regional title and a place at the 2027 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations at stake.
Burkina Faso secured their place in the final on Wednesday after defeating Niger Republic 2-0 in the second semi-final, setting up a repeat clash with Nigeria.
The Young Stallions had earlier defeated the Flying Eagles 2-0 in their final Group B encounter, finishing top of the group and handing Nigeria their only defeat of the competition so far.
Nigeria, however, fought their way back into contention with a dramatic semi-final victory over hosts Côte d’Ivoire.
The Flying Eagles were held to a 2-2 draw after extra time before edging the Ivorians 4-3 on penalties to book their place in the final.
The result has now set up an intriguing rematch between two sides that already know each other well.
For Nigeria, the final offers an immediate opportunity to avenge the group-stage defeat while defending the WAFU B crown they won in 2024.
But the stakes go beyond regional bragging rights.
The winner of the final will secure the WAFU B zone’s available qualification ticket for the 2027 U-20 AFCON, with hosts Ghana already guaranteed a place at next year’s continental tournament.
That leaves Nigeria and Burkina Faso battling for the remaining ticket, making the final a genuine winner-takes-all encounter.
The Flying Eagles will need to improve significantly on their performance against Burkina Faso in the group stage, where they struggled to find a way past the Young Stallions’ organised defence.
Burkina Faso, meanwhile, will take confidence from that victory and their subsequent 2-0 semi-final success against Niger Republic.
Nigeria will nevertheless draw encouragement from their resilience against Côte d’Ivoire, particularly their ability to hold their nerve during the penalty shootout.
With the WAFU B trophy and a 2027 U-20 AFCON ticket both on the line, the final promises another stern examination for Nigeria’s youngsters.
The Flying Eagles now have one opportunity to turn their earlier disappointment against Burkina Faso into redemption — and finish their title defence with the regional crown and continental qualification secured.
