WAFU-B U-17: Nigeria Crash Out, Miss Third Straight AFCON as Eaglets  Crisis Deepens

Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets have been eliminated from the 2026 WAFU-B U-17 Championship after a 1–1 draw with Côte d’Ivoire, extending the country’s absence from the continental age-grade tournament and raising fresh questions about the state of youth football development.

Nigeria’s hopes of returning to the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations have suffered another setback after the Golden Eaglets failed to advance beyond the group stage of the WAFU-B U-17 Championship in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

The Nigerian youngsters needed a victory against Côte d’Ivoire on Saturday to keep their qualification hopes alive, but could only manage a 1–1 draw in their decisive Group B encounter.

The result followed their 2–1 defeat to Niger in their opening match, leaving Nigeria unable to secure the points required to advance to the semi-finals. Niger and Côte d’Ivoire progressed from the group.

The elimination means Nigeria will miss the 2027 U-17 AFCON in Morocco, marking another damaging chapter in the decline of a country that once dominated youth football on the continent.

It also means the Golden Eaglets’ absence from the FIFA U-17 World Cup will continue. Nigeria last featured at the global tournament in 2019, when the team reached the round of 16 in Brazil. The country has won the competition a record five times, according to FIFA.

A campaign that unravelled in two matches

Nigeria’s campaign began with a 2–1 defeat to Niger on October 14. Abdoul Razaq Zada opened the scoring in the 19th minute before Abdoul Rakilou doubled Niger’s advantage in the 86th minute. Substitute Mubarak Fasiu pulled one back for Nigeria in stoppage time, but the late goal could not prevent defeat.

The loss placed enormous pressure on the Golden Eaglets ahead of their final group fixture against Côte d’Ivoire.

Against the Ivorians, Nigeria needed to turn that pressure into a victory. Instead, the 1–1 result ended their hopes of reaching the semi-finals and qualifying for the continental finals.

The WAFU-B competition serves as the qualification pathway for the 2027 U-17 AFCON. Failure to progress therefore carries consequences beyond the regional tournament, shutting the door on another generation of Nigerian youngsters hoping to compete at Africa’s highest U-17 level.

From five-time world champions to repeated qualification failures

Nigeria’s record in youth football makes the latest elimination particularly troubling.

The Golden Eaglets have lifted the FIFA U-17 World Cup five times, establishing a reputation as one of the most successful teams in the competition’s history. For decades, the age-grade side provided a platform for young players to demonstrate their talent and gain international exposure.

That pedigree, however, has not translated into consistent qualification in recent years.

Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2025 U-17 AFCON after losing 1–0 to Côte d’Ivoire in the WAFU-B semi-finals in 2024. The country also missed the 2023 U-17 AFCON after losing to Burkina Faso in the quarter-finals of the competition’s qualifying tournament.

The latest failure now extends the country’s absence from the continental finals and leaves the Golden Eaglets facing a prolonged wait for a return to the FIFA U-17 World Cup, which they last contested in 2019.

These setbacks raise questions about whether Nigeria’s traditional advantage in youth football is being eroded by weaknesses in talent identification, preparation and long-term development.
