The Super Falcons of Nigeria will begin the defence of their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title on Tuesday when they take on Malawi in their Group C opener, with captain Rasheedat Ajibade insisting that securing all three points is the team’s foremost priority.
Speaking ahead of the encounter, Ajibade stressed that winning, rather than entertaining displays, will define a successful performance for the nine-time African champions.
“Getting the three points against Malawi is performance for us. There is no performance if you fail to win your game,” Ajibade said.
The Atlético Madrid forward also warned against underestimating Malawi, noting the remarkable progress the Southern African nation has made over the years.
“We will approach the game with a sense of humility, show respect, commitment and get our job done.”
“I watched Malawi play years back and I have seen their improvement over the years. It shows the intention of their Football Association, so they deserve our full commitment and respect.”
Nigeria enter the tournament as defending champions but have endured a build-up that many observers believe has been less extensive than some of their rivals.
Hosts Morocco made a strong statement with a commanding 4-0 victory over Kenya in the opening round, while Algeria defeated Senegal 2-0 to underline the growing competitiveness of women’s football on the continent.
Malawi, meanwhile, arrive in Morocco as a disciplined and improving side determined to upset the established order.
Head coach Justine Madugu has repeatedly urged his players to remain focused and avoid complacency as they target a winning start.
Beyond retaining their continental crown, the Super Falcons are also chasing qualification for the next FIFA Women’s World Cup, with the tournament’s top four teams earning Africa’s automatic qualification slots.
With expectations high, Nigeria will be looking to begin their campaign on a positive note and reinforce their status as Africa’s most successful women’s national team when they face the Scorchers of Malawi.
