Ghana and Cameroon made winning starts to their 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaigns after securing victories in their opening Group D matches on Wednesday in Casablanca.
The Black Queens of Ghana recorded a comfortable 2-0 win over tournament debutants Cape Verde at the Moulay Rachid Stadium to claim their first three points of the competition.
Ghana controlled the game from the outset and produced a clinical display to seal victory, while Cape Verde’s difficult debut ended on a sour note after Kleydiana Borges was shown a straight red card deep into stoppage time.
In the day’s other Group D encounter, Cameroon edged Mali 2-1 in a closely contested match at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium.
The Indomitable Lionesses showed resilience to overcome a determined Malian side, earning all three points and joining Ghana at the top of the group after the opening round of fixtures.
The results leave Ghana and Cameroon level on three points, while Mali and Cape Verde remain without a point heading into Matchday Two.

Attention now shifts back to Group A on Thursday, with hosts Morocco taking on Algeria in the headline fixture after Senegal face Kenya in the earlier game.
