Thomas Tuchel Defends England’s World Cup Campaign After Messi-Inspired Argentina End Final Dream
England head coach Thomas Tuchel has described his side’s run to the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup as a significant achievement despite their heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Lionel Messi-inspired Argentina.
England looked on course for a first World Cup final appearance since 1966 after taking the lead, but Argentina mounted a dramatic comeback, with Messi playing a decisive role in sending the defending champions into another World Cup final.
Despite criticism over his substitutions as England surrendered their advantage, Tuchel insisted he has no regrets and remains fully committed to leading the Three Lions into UEFA Euro 2028.
The German coach also retains the full backing of the Football Association.
“We keep on going with the contract until the home Euros,” Tuchel said after the match.
“I’m looking forward to that even though right now it’s difficult to look that far ahead.
“A lot of big football nations are eliminated before the semi-final, so it is an achievement. No one wants to hear that at the moment, me neither, because we demand the most of ourselves.”
Tuchel signed a two-year contract extension in February after initially taking charge in January 2025 with the mission of ending England’s long wait for World Cup glory.
Following the painful defeat, FA Chief Executive Mark Bullingham reaffirmed the association’s confidence in the former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager.
“It is heartbreaking to be so close,” Bullingham said. “The players and Thomas gave everything throughout the tournament, and we remain proud of their efforts.”
England will now face France in Saturday’s third-place playoff, with victory securing the nation’s best World Cup finish since winning the tournament on home soil in 1966.
Argentina, inspired by Lionel Messi’s brilliance, will meet Spain in Sunday’s World Cup final as they bid to retain the title.
