Strategic collaboration to spotlight Nigeria’s neglected goalkeeping talents and foster international opportunities
Amidst the growing global recognition of Nigerian goalkeepers for their outstanding performances both within and outside the country, Nigeria is currently hosting Swedish Football Association (FA) goalkeeper scout, Mr. Lamine, for an intensive five-day scouting program.
The program is being executed in partnership with one of Nigeria’s foremost goalkeeper trainers, John Dosu, in a strategic effort to direct more attention to the goalkeeping department of Nigerian football.
Speaking ahead of the tour, Dosu explained that the five-day exercise, which will take place across various centers in Lagos State, is aimed at showcasing the vast pool of raw goalkeeping talents that have largely remained untapped.
According to him, goalkeeping is an area of football that has been consistently neglected by scouts and agents in Nigeria, as focus is predominantly placed on outfield players.
“The exploits of our goalkeepers in recent times have caught the attention of the world. However, at the grassroots level, the goalkeeping department is still mostly ignored, everyone’s attention is always on the outfield players,” Dosu noted.
“This collaboration is our own way of beaming more searchlight on this crucial department and ensuring our goalkeepers get a fair share of opportunities.”
Dosu further disclosed that beyond talent discovery, the partnership is also geared towards securing more technical support and knowledge exchange to enhance goalkeeper training and development in Nigeria.
“The five-day tour is to help ensure that our goalkeepers are also given fair opportunities locally and internationally, just like any other grassroots players, we want to create a sustainable pathway for them,” he added.
The scouting tour is expected to identify promising talents for further development and open doors for potential international placements and technical partnerships between Nigeria and Sweden.
