Super Eagles’ 2018 World Cup Jersey Ranked Among Top Five Greatest World Cup Kits of All Time

Nigeria’s iconic 2018 FIFA World Cup jersey has once again received global recognition after being ranked fifth among the greatest and most iconic World Cup shirts in history by the BBC.

In a special feature published ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the British media giant compiled a list of the 10 most memorable World Cup kits ever produced, placing Nigeria’s striking green-and-white design among football’s all-time classics.

The Super Eagles’ 2018 home jersey, designed by American creative director Matthew Wolff for Nike, became a worldwide sensation even before the tournament kicked off in Russia.

The shirt’s bold zig-zag pattern, inspired by Nigeria’s vibrant football culture and heritage, attracted unprecedented demand from fans across the globe.

According to the BBC, more than three million people pre-ordered the jersey, while long queues formed outside Nike’s flagship store in London when it officially went on sale.

Explaining the inspiration behind the design, Wolff revealed that the creative team drew heavily from Nigeria’s rich football history, particularly the country’s memorable kits from 1994 and 2002.

“The goal wasn’t to invent something out of thin air; it was to pull on threads already there in the country’s footballing identity,” Wolff said.

He added that the jersey’s success coincided with a period when Nigerian culture was enjoying increasing global influence in music, fashion, art, film and literature.

“Nigeria was having a global cultural moment. The kit landed in the middle of that wave, and I think it resonated because the wave was swelling,” he explained.

The BBC described the shirt as a rare example of a football jersey that became instantly iconic not only because of performances on the pitch but also because of its enormous impact on fashion and popular culture.

Topping the BBC’s ranking was the legendary 1990 West Germany World Cup home shirt, followed by Argentina’s 1986 away jersey and the United States’ famous 1994 away kit. Brazil’s classic 1970 home shirt finished fourth, with Nigeria completing the top five.
