Spain End 16-Year World Cup Knockout Wait as Oyarzabal Brace Downs Austria
Spain booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 with a convincing 3-0 victory over Austria on Thursday, ending a 16-year wait for a knockout-stage win at the tournament.
Mikel Oyarzabal scored twice while Pedro Porro added the other goal as the European champions produced a dominant display at Los Angeles Stadium to secure their first World Cup knockout victory since defeating the Netherlands in the 2010 final.
After controlling possession for much of the opening half, Spain finally broke the deadlock in the 36th minute when Marc Cucurella delivered a low cross for Oyarzabal to finish from close range.
Spain thought they had taken an earlier lead through Cucurella, but the effort was ruled out for a foul on Austrian goalkeeper Alexander Schlager during the build-up.
Schlager produced several impressive saves to keep Austria in the contest, denying Oyarzabal before making a brilliant double stop from Álex Baena’s free-kick and Lamine Yamal’s follow-up effort.
Spain eventually doubled their advantage in the 66th minute as Pedro Porro surged into the box to head home Baena’s inviting cross after a patient attacking move.
Oyarzabal completed his brace in the 89th minute, racing onto another perfectly weighted pass from Cucurella before calmly sliding the ball past Schlager to seal an emphatic victory.
Austria, playing their first World Cup knockout match since 1954, rarely threatened Spain’s defence.
Substitute Sasa Kalajdzic came closest with a header that drifted over the crossbar, while goalkeeper Unai Simón kept his fourth consecutive clean sheet of the tournament.
The victory also saw Oyarzabal move to four goals at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, underlining his importance to Spain’s title challenge.
Spain will now face Portugal in the Round of 16 as they continue their quest for a second FIFA World Cup crown, while Austria’s campaign comes to an end after an impressive run to the knockout stage.
