Spain reached the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-finals after Mikel Merino’s dramatic late strike earned a thrilling 2-1 victory over Belgium in Los Angeles.
Luis de la Fuente’s men looked set for extra time before substitute Merino produced the decisive moment in the 88th minute, sealing Spain’s place in the last four where they will face France on Tuesday, July 14.
Spain dominated the early exchanges and deservedly took the lead in the 30th minute through Fabián Ruiz, who calmly finished off a well-worked attacking move.
Belgium, however, responded before the break as Charles De Ketelaere powered home a header from Timothy Castagne’s cross in the 41st minute, ending Spain’s run without conceding a goal at the tournament.
The second half developed into an evenly contested affair, with both sides creating chances but struggling to find the breakthrough.
Belgium’s hopes suffered a major blow when goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was forced off injured.
Substitute Senne Lammens made several important saves but endured a heartbreaking finish after failing to hold Pau Cubarsí’s long-range effort in the closing stages.
Merino reacted quickest to the rebound, smashing the loose ball into the roof of the net from close range to spark jubilant celebrations among the Spanish players and supporters.
The Arsenal midfielder once again proved Spain’s super substitute, having also scored the decisive winner against Portugal in the Round of 16.
Spain’s victory keeps their World Cup dream alive and sets up a blockbuster semi-final showdown against France as they continue their pursuit of a second FIFA World Cup title.
