South African international and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25, prompting an outpouring of tributes from the Confederation of African Football (CAF), FIFA, the South African government, and the global football community.
Adams, who recently represented Bafana Bafana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, was confirmed dead on Saturday. South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, announced the tragic news, describing the midfielder as one of the country’s brightest football talents.
“It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams,” McKenzie said in a statement.
The minister, however, disclosed that the cause of death has not yet been established and appealed to the public and media to avoid speculation while investigations continue.
According to South African police, the body of a 25-year-old man was discovered at a residence in Schotschekloof, a suburb of Cape Town, on Saturday morning.
Authorities confirmed that an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death is underway.CAF President Motsepe Pays Tribute CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe expressed deep sadness over Adams’ passing, extending condolences on behalf of African football.
“On behalf of CAF and its 54 Member Associations, I convey my heartfelt condolences to the South African Football Association (SAFA), its President Dr. Danny Jordaan, Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club, and the family of Jayden Adams,” Motsepe said.
CAF also honoured the midfielder’s achievements, noting that he featured for South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and helped Mamelodi Sundowns win the 2026 CAF Champions League title.
World Cup Hero Remembered
Adams played in all three of South Africa’s group-stage matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, helping Bafana Bafana reach the Round of 32 for the first time in the nation’s history.
Although he did not feature in the knockout defeat to Canada, his performances earned widespread praise.
His World Cup campaign was marked by personal tragedy after he lost his grandmother just hours before South Africa’s Group A clash against the Czech Republic.
Despite the heartbreaking news, Adams started the match and delivered a committed performance for his country.
Stellar Career Cut Short
Born in Cape Town, Adams progressed through the Stellenbosch FC academy and became the club’s first academy graduate to sign a professional contract in 2020.
He made 139 appearances for Stellenbosch, helping the club win the Carling Knockout Cup in 2023 before completing a move to Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025.
At Sundowns, he added both the South African Premiership title and the CAF Champions League trophy to his growing list of achievements.Internationally, Adams debuted for South Africa in 2022 and was also part of the Bafana Bafana squad that finished third at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.
FIFA, SAFA Join Global Mourning
FIFA President Gianni Infantino described Adams’ death as “incredibly sad,” offering condolences to his family, teammates and supporters.
The South African Football Players Union also paid tribute, describing his death as “an immeasurable loss” to South African football.Adams’ passing has left the football world in mourning, with tributes continuing to pour in for a player widely regarded as one of South Africa’s brightest talents, whose career and life ended far too soon.
