Kanyinsola Ajayi and Ezekiel Nathaniel both missed the podium after finishing fourth in their respective events at the Silesia Diamond League in Poland on Saturday, delivering strong performances against world-class opposition.
Ajayi clocked 9.94 seconds to finish fourth in the men’s 100m, narrowly missing out on a podium place in a fiercely contested race.
Jamaica’s Oblique Seville claimed the title in a meeting-record 9.83 seconds, finishing ahead of American Kenny Bednarek, who ran 9.87 seconds, and compatriot Christian Coleman, who secured third in 9.93 seconds.
South Africa’s Gift Leotlela edged Ajayi into fourth with 9.95 seconds, while fellow South African Akani Simbine finished seventh in 9.96 seconds. Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme placed ninth in 9.99 seconds.
Despite missing the podium, Ajayi’s 9.94-second performance further underlined his growing status among the leading sprinters on the international circuit.
Nathaniel also narrowly missed out on a medal in the men’s 400m hurdles after finishing fourth in 47.83 seconds.
Brazil’s Alison dos Santos produced a world-leading 46.43 seconds to win the event, while Norway’s Olympic and world champion Karsten Warholm finished second in a season-best 46.52 seconds.
Another Brazilian, Matheus Lima, completed the podium with a personal-best 47.26 seconds.
Nathaniel’s fourth-place finish adds to his consistent performances against the world’s best 400m hurdlers.
The results represent another solid outing for Nigeria at the Diamond League, with both Ajayi and Nathaniel continuing to make their mark on the global athletics stage despite narrowly missing podium finishes.
