Mohamed Salah Inspires Egypt to Historic First FIFA World Cup Victory, Ends 92-Year Wait
Egypt secured a landmark moment in their football history as Mohamed Salah starred in a dramatic 3-1 comeback victory over New Zealand, earning the Pharaohs their first-ever FIFA World Cup win and ending a 92-year wait for success on the global stage.
Playing at BC Place in Vancouver on Monday, Egypt recovered from an early setback to claim all three points in Group G and move to the brink of a historic first qualification to the knockout stage of the tournament.
New Zealand struck first in the 15th minute when defender Finn Surman rose highest to head home Tim Payne’s corner, giving the All Whites a deserved lead at halftime.
However, Egypt emerged transformed after the break under the guidance of coach Hossam Hassan.
The North Africans levelled in the 58th minute through Mostafa Zico, who headed in a precise cross from Mohamed Hany.
Nine minutes later, Egypt’s talisman Salah produced a moment of class.
The former Liverpool forward combined brilliantly with Zico in a neat one-two before calmly slotting the ball into the bottom corner to complete the turnaround.
Salah was not done yet. In the 82nd minute, he delivered a perfectly weighted corner that was powered home by substitute Mahmoud Hassan “Trezeguet” to seal a famous victory for the African side.
The result marks Egypt’s first win in four World Cup appearances, dating back to their debut at the 1934 tournament.
It also places them at the top of Group G and within touching distance of reaching the World Cup knockout rounds for the first time in their history.
Salah, named Player of the Match, finished with a goal and an assist, delivering the performance Egypt needed after years of World Cup disappointment.
The Pharaohs will now face Iran in their final group match, knowing a victory would secure top spot in the group, while New Zealand must defeat Belgium to keep their qualification hopes alive.
