Russia vs Nigeria: Nine Players Debut as Super Eagles Fight Back in Six-Goal Thriller
Nigeria’s depleted Super Eagles produced a spirited performance to twice fight back from behind and secure a dramatic 3-3 draw against Russia in an entertaining international friendly in Nizhny Novgorod on Tuesday.
Despite the absence of several established regulars, Éric Chelle’s youthful side showed character, resilience and attacking intent as Nigeria recovered from a 3-1 deficit to earn a share of the spoils on foreign soil.
The encounter also provided Chelle with an opportunity to assess the depth of his squad, with nine players making their senior international debuts.
Only six members of Nigeria’s starting XI—Moses Simon, Kelechi Iheanacho, Benjamin Fredricks, Emmanuel Fernandez, Abdullahi Bewene and Aderemi Adeoye—had previously represented the Super Eagles.
Nigeria made the perfect start when Iheanacho opened the scoring in the 11th minute.
The returning forward collected a precise pass from Abdullahi Bewene on the edge of the penalty area before unleashing a powerful left-footed strike into the top corner. The goal was Iheanacho’s 15th for Nigeria.
Russia gradually grew into the contest, however, and punished lapses in the Nigerian defence to draw level.
The hosts then completed the turnaround shortly before half-time, going into the break with a 2-1 advantage.
Russia increased their lead nine minutes into the second half to make it 3-1, leaving Nigeria facing a difficult task.
Chelle responded by introducing fresh legs, and the changes transformed the Super Eagles’ attacking threat.
Umar Abdullahi almost reduced the deficit in the 73rd minute after Nigeria won possession high up the pitch following strong work by Isaac James.
Five minutes later, Nigeria found their second goal through 19-year-old debutant Peter Edokpolor.
The youngster showed impressive composure and determination, driving through the Russian defence before unleashing an unstoppable effort beyond the goalkeeper to make it 3-2.
With Nigeria gaining momentum, Chelle introduced Vince Osuji for Chibuzo Nwoko in the 83rd minute as the Super Eagles continued to push for an equaliser.
Their persistence finally paid off deep into stoppage time.
Emmanuel Fernandez launched a swift counter-attack with a header from defence, finding Umar Abdullahi, who produced an intelligent square pass for substitute Akor Adams.
The striker made no mistake, turning the ball home in the 94th minute to complete Nigeria’s remarkable comeback and seal a 3-3 draw.
The result capped an encouraging night for Chelle and a largely inexperienced Nigerian squad.
Beyond the result, the performance offered the Super Eagles valuable evidence of their emerging depth, with several debutants making strong impressions against a Russian side on home soil.
For a team heavily affected by withdrawals, Nigeria’s ability to recover from two goals down and avoid defeat demonstrated the fighting spirit and competitive character Chelle is seeking to build ahead of more important assignments.
The six-goal thriller ultimately ended honours even, but the Super Eagles can take considerable encouragement from a performance that showcased resilience, youthful energy and a growing pool of international options.
