Russell Wins Austrian GP as Antonelli Extends F1 Championship Lead

George Russell produced a flawless drive to win the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, converting pole position into his second Formula 1 victory of the season.

The Mercedes driver controlled proceedings from lights to flag, holding off a determined late challenge from Max Verstappen, who recovered brilliantly from fifth on the grid to finish second for Red Bull.

Championship leader Kimi Antonelli completed the podium after a strong late-race charge that saw him close to within three-tenths of a second of Verstappen at the chequered flag.

Russell’s victory marks a welcome return to the top step after a difficult spell for Mercedes and moves the Briton back up to second in the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship, although he remains 40 points behind teammate Antonelli.

Despite suffering a failure of his drinks system during the race, Russell maintained his composure throughout the 71-lap contest.

“Incredible to be back on the top step again,” Russell said after the race. “It has been a while, so I’m going to enjoy this one. The team timed everything to perfection.”

Antonelli admitted an error-filled opening stint cost him the opportunity to challenge for victory but praised the team’s overall performance after securing another valuable podium finish to strengthen his championship lead.

Verstappen, who was nursing a knee injury sustained during qualifying, praised Red Bull’s race pace after climbing from fifth to second.

McLaren’s Oscar Piastri finished fourth, while Lewis Hamilton endured a frustrating afternoon to bring his Ferrari home in fifth after starting third.

Isack Hadjar continued his impressive season with sixth place for Red Bull, ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris in seventh. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc recovered to finish eighth, while Racing Bulls teammates Liam Lawson and rookie Arvid Lindblad completed the top 10.

Further down the order, Gabriel Bortoleto finished 11th ahead of Nico Hulkenberg, Pierre Gasly, Ollie Bearman, Franco Colapinto, Esteban Ocon, Alex Albon and Fernando Alonso.

Four drivers failed to finish the race, with Lance Stroll, Carlos Sainz, Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas all retiring.

Russell’s victory provides a timely boost for Mercedes as the Formula 1 season heads into its next round, while Antonelli’s consistent podium finish further strengthens his grip on the championship despite Verstappen’s impressive recovery drive.
