Ronaldo Suffers Heaviest Al Nassr Defeat as Al Ain Deliver Champions League Shock

Cristiano Ronaldo suffered his heaviest defeat since joining Al Nassr as the Saudi Pro League champions were dismantled 4-0 by Al Ain in their opening AFC Champions League Elite fixture on Tuesday night.

Al Nassr arrived at the Hazza bin Zayed Stadium with a star-studded squad featuring Ronaldo, Sadio Mané and João Félix, but were comprehensively outplayed by the UAE side in a result that immediately puts pressure on Ange Postecoglou’s team.

The defeat is Ronaldo’s heaviest since his move to Saudi Arabia and represents a particularly damaging opening to Al Nassr’s continental campaign.

Rahimi brothers punish Al Nassr

Al Ain took control after 25 minutes when Houssine Rahimi capitalised on a defensive mistake to open the scoring.

The Moroccan forward doubled Al Ain’s advantage in the 63rd minute before his brother, Soufiane Rahimi, added a third nine minutes later.

Giorgos Giakoumakis completed the rout in the 85th minute, leaving Al Nassr facing a four-goal deficit at the beginning of their Champions League Elite campaign.

The performance was particularly striking given Al Nassr’s attacking firepower. Ronaldo, Mané and João Félix were unable to find a response as Al Ain maintained control for long periods.

Ronaldo frustrated as milestone goal remains elusive

Ronaldo completed the match but endured a frustrating evening in front of goal.

The 41-year-old was unable to find the net as he continued his pursuit of career goal number 980, with Al Ain goalkeeper Khalid Eisa denying him from a late free-kick opportunity.

Rather than providing the expected attacking response, Al Nassr struggled to create enough clear opportunities to change the direction of the game.

Postecoglou accepts responsibility

The defeat has also intensified scrutiny on Postecoglou, who accepted responsibility for the performance after the final whistle.

“Al-Nassr as a whole was poor,” the Australian coach said, while taking responsibility for the team’s display.

The result leaves Al Nassr with one victory from their last four matches across all competitions, according to the Associated Press, adding to the concern surrounding the team’s early-season form.

Al Nassr face early continental test

For a club seeking to make a serious impact in Asia, the defeat could hardly have been more damaging.

Al Nassr are yet to win the continent’s premier club competition, and their 2026/27 campaign has now begun with a four-goal defeat and a significant negative goal difference.

The Saudi champions still have seven league-phase matches in which to recover, but Tuesday’s result has exposed defensive vulnerabilities that Postecoglou will need to address quickly.

For Ronaldo, meanwhile, the night was a rare reminder that even a squad built around some of football’s biggest names can be overwhelmed when the collective performance fails to match the individual quality.

Al Nassr’s next Champions League Elite fixtures will now carry added importance as they attempt to recover from one of the most difficult European-style continental nights of Ronaldo’s Saudi career.
