Ronaldo Scores Brace, Sets Historic World Cup Records as Portugal Crush Uzbekistan
Cristiano Ronaldo etched his name deeper into football history on Tuesday night, scoring twice as Portugal cruised to a commanding 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group K clash in Houston.
The Portuguese captain opened the scoring in the sixth minute, converting João Cancelo’s cross with a clinical finish to become the first player in football history to score in six different FIFA World Cup tournaments.
At 41 years old, Ronaldo also became the second-oldest player ever to score at a World Cup, behind Cameroonian legend Roger Milla, who found the net at the age of 42 during the 1994 tournament.
Portugal, who faced criticism following their opening 1-1 draw against DR Congo, responded emphatically with a dominant display against the World Cup debutants.
Nuno Mendes doubled Portugal’s advantage in the 17th minute with a superb direct free-kick from 20 yards out, putting the Europeans firmly in control.
Uzbekistan briefly thought they had pulled a goal back through Aziz G’aniev, but the effort was ruled out after a foul on Cancelo in the build-up.
Ronaldo struck again six minutes before halftime. Bruno Fernandes won possession in midfield and delivered a perfectly weighted pass into the path of the veteran forward, who calmly slotted home to make it 3-0.
Portugal continued their dominance after the break.
Uzbekistan goalkeeper Abduvohid Nematov inadvertently turned the ball into his own net following a corner-kick scramble, extending Portugal’s lead to four goals.
Substitute Rafael Leão completed the rout in the 87th minute with a powerful finish to seal a comprehensive 5-0 victory.
The result moved Portugal to the top of Group K and strengthened their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages and while Uzbekistan hang on to the last match against Dr Congo to know their fate after back to back losses.
Ronaldo’s landmark achievement adds another chapter to an extraordinary international career.
Having scored at the 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022 and now 2026 World Cups, the Portuguese icon stands alone as the only player to find the net in six separate editions of football’s biggest tournament.
The forward was making his 24th World Cup appearance, further underlining his remarkable longevity at the highest level of the game.
For Uzbekistan, the defeat marked the end of a difficult evening against one of the tournament’s favourites, while Portugal left Houston with renewed confidence and a place in the history books.
