Nigerian wrestler Christiana Ogunsanya has won the country’s first medal at the ongoing 2026 Ulaanbaatar Open Ranking Series in Mongolia after claiming bronze in the women’s 53kg event.
Ogunsanya produced an impressive display in the bronze medal match, edging Mongolia’s Otgontuya Bayanmunkh 6-6 on criteria to secure a podium finish for Team Nigeria at the prestigious United World Wrestling tournament on Friday.
The Nigerian star battled through a competitive field filled with experienced wrestlers from across the globe, showing determination and composure on her way to the medal.
Her success further highlights Nigeria’s growing influence in international women’s wrestling, a discipline where the country has continued to achieve notable results in recent years.
In the 53kg category, DPR Korea’s Kyong Ryong Oh captured the gold medal after defeating Japan’s Moe Kiyooka 10-6 in the final, while Romania’s Andreea Ana settled for the other bronze medal.
Ogunsanya’s bronze medal represents another positive outing for Nigerian wrestling on the world stage as athletes continue preparations for future continental and global championships.
Elsewhere at the Ulaanbaatar Open, India enjoyed a strong campaign in the women’s division with gold medals from Manisha in the 57kg class and Neha in the 59kg category, while DPR Korea also dominated several weight divisions.
The Ulaanbaatar Open Ranking Series remains one of the key tournaments on the international wrestling calendar, bringing together elite competitors from different countries under the banner of United World Wrestling.
