OFFICIAL: NFF President Ibrahim Gusau Resigns, Says, “I Have Decided to Resign”
Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Musa Gusau has announced his resignation, bringing his tenure to an end amid mounting pressure from stakeholders over the country’s recent football setbacks.
Gusau made the announcement on Thursday in Abuja during a world press conference, stating that he had consulted his family, friends and various stakeholders before reaching the decision.
“Because of that, there was so much clamour from here and there, from all stakeholders, everybody. We all love our country and we all love the progress of our country,” Gusau said.
“We made a lot of consultations with family, friends, stakeholders and all. I just want to tell you that I decided to resign my position as President of the Nigeria Football Federation.
“I advised my board members, I informed them and I advised them.”
The resignation follows sustained criticism of the NFF leadership after a difficult period for Nigerian football.
Under Gusau, the Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite Nigeria winning silver at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and bronze at the 2025 AFCON.
The pressure intensified following the Super Falcons’ disappointing campaign.
The reigning African champions relinquished their title, failed to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup and recorded their lowest-ever finish in WAFCON history.
The Flying Eagles also suffered a major setback after relinquishing their continental title and subsequently failing to qualify for the 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, which serves as the qualifying tournament for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
Gusau maintained that he had given his best to Nigerian football and expressed his willingness to continue contributing to the development of the sport.
“For me, I want to make it clear, I gave my best of work. I hope to continue to give my contribution,” he said.
